intermittent a/c compressor

Post by tinroof »

'93 850...problem...a/c compressor doesn't cycle.
I have no 12 volts at low pressure sensor indicating a/c relay; however, when I apply 12v direct from battery to pin on the switch, engine running, the compressor runs about 45 seconds, then clutch cycles off. After about a minute, clutch works again, and compressor cycles. This on/off routine will continue indefinitely. I understand there's a temp sensor in the compressor, and I suspect it's defective. Can this sensor be bypassed? Whith 12v to the compressor, via the direct connect from battery to low pressure switch, it oughta run until the voltage is removed. Any help is appreciated.

Ok Team here it is, I found this info on an old post so I will try to keep it as close as I can-broken down ofcourse.

I had the blinking a/c lights and cyclic reduncy issue with my condensor, that means our volvos probably have leaks in the lines and charging them with the kits of R-134a from quest "Cool Zone #390 complete recharge kit" I bought from autozone $48 bucks, it has 3 cans of refrigerant they each have the charge, conditioner, and stop leak -www.efproducts.com- it comes with a gauge that self taps the can. you can use the gauge to test the R- level without using the can!

The first time I tried this I was a bit worried cause while I was filling the line the gauge would shoot up to Danger! Which I have learned not to worry about cause it is safe regardless it will not over fill the AC as some people claim, just pierce the can and open it wide up! -and if there is any thing leftover you can just unscrew it holding it away from you so the R- will just escape and evaperate so do it outside.

here is my advice.........

1. connect the gauge w/out can!
2. turn on car, and turn a/c on full blast for a few minutes.....
3. your gauge should be to 55 if it is full (remember it will not over fill)
4. follow the lines from the condenser to the fire wall if there is enough R- you should feel one of the lines is cold and the other is warm, that means to add your cans, cause both lines should feel cold if there is sufficient R-
5. screw in a can tighen to pierce- open it wide up the gauge will shoot to danger (do not worry it is typical!)
- soon you will have an arctic like a/c, and you will be proud of yourself cause you didnt have to get ripped off from the stealership or any other grease monkey shops!

Yes it is possible to overfill and more than likely the receiver/dryer canister will split after a short time

Hey Jot........................... I asume you have used the "Cool Zone" kit and had problems.......... one of the guys that works with me also works at autozone he claims since they have sold this kit they have never had any customer complaints about overfilling with this kit , the gauge has a back pressure valve, and the cans have a lower psi than than any a/c.
How can you blow too much in when the psi is higher from the a/c? unless you are using some kind of tank with a higher pressure to force it in.

/// If you have had a problem with this exact kit, I will let him know to give the customers better instructions. ///

The intsructions from this product have no cautions or warnings other than use safety goggles and gloves. Any product getting to a retail shelf containing any chemicles must be approved by OSHA to have the proper precautionaries. And ofcourse they are not gonna tell anyone to dispose of the can in the air.

Does anyone know if the 1994 850 Wagons are 134-A compliant? Or are they on the cusp and didn't get the newer benefits? I need cool air. I think I have a leak, but it's SO MUCH CHEAPER to keep refilling rather than getting the leak fixed. I know, I'm cheap... but I'm good.

My 94' 850 A/C cuts out when idling and was no longer blowing cold air. I tried to recharge (mine is 134a, but some 94's are R12). It seemed to take some coolant (now blows mildly cool air), but the system would stop taking coolant each time the a/c unit cut out - the can pressure would then head into the red. Years ago I had the same cut out problem and the Dealer fixed it by replacing the High pressure switch. Is this something I can do my self (ie, just switch out the switch) or is it more complex.

You guys apparently haven't done your homework when it comes to AC systems. If the compressor is working while you are charging, then YOU CAN OVERFILL!!!! The compressor causes the low side to be about 30psi and the cans are at a much higher pressure.

I forgot where I found this link (it could have been here) but it is a great write-up for volvo AC info
