Intermittent speedometer

Post by Faust »

My speedometer only operates intermittently. I have tried to note any order to external factors such as temperature, but there does not seem to be any order.

I know about the odometer gear, but can't see a mechanical failure being intermittent.

I rarely use cruise control, so it took me a while to notice this. Today I tried to switch on the cruise while the speedometer was not working, I got no response. It is my general impression that cruise control does not get its signal from the speedometer.

Can anyone tell me the points of commonality between the cruise and the speedometer?

From what I've been told by others on the site(see my posts) sounds like a abs module.

I concur, ABS module.

(On 1996-1998 models, the vehicle speed is measured through the ABS module from the two front wheel sensors).

Possible speed sensor, but unlikely. Speedometer and cruise run off of the abs module.

Are your abs lights on?

No, but I had to change an axle recently. I think I had better pull the wheel and checkthe ABS sensor.

Do your ABS lights come on at start up like they're supposed to? Seems odd that it isn't working yet you don't have a light.

One of three possible things...could be more though.

1. Speed sensor isn't plugged back in properly.
2. Axle wasn't torqued down properly
3. This just happened to be the time your abs module went out
