Dip stick has smoke coming out still

Post by JonFreeman938 »

I had smoke coming out of my dipstick and people told me thats the PVC system bein clogged up. I replaced the PCV oil trap box and it's still has smoke coming out. What else could be the problem?

Did you change all other associated hoses and clean the ports in the lower engine block?

If it's a turbo, did you clean the PTC port at the turbo intake hose? If it's a non turbo, did you get rid of the flame trap disc in the side of the throttle body hose?

I did not replace the PCV hoses, but they looked fine and I spayed some degreaser in there and sprayed some water in it and it seemed fine. I did clean all the ports. It is not a turbo. BKM number 5) my temperature gauge doesn't go up very much as I'm drivin so that could be it.

Hi JonFreeman938,

What is the mileage of the car?
How often do you change the oil?
What type of filter do you use?
What brand of oil also?
Do you use Unleaded or Super Unleaded? Need to use Super once in a while.
Do you drive mostly city or highway and distance?
Winter in Maryland short trips on the freeway or city does not warm up the car much

The following may eliminate the smoke but definitely bring the car back to health if you have a high mileage engine with maybe worn but not bad rings and worn valve seals.

1) Generic Oil Change and Swepco 502 for 500 miles and change out. Use a WIX's filter. Engine WILL quite down and feel more powerful.
2) Depending on time of year Swepco 306 10-30W and 15-40W during warmer season. Unless you have freezing temps then use 5-30W. Here in CA I change it out only once a year or 10K~12K depending on when I can get to it.
3) Use Swepco 503 in several tanks of Gas. Clean injectors and valve seats (increase compression). The oil will do the same for piston rings.

Some of the companies do have 100,000 mile change intervals as they provide it to keep track of the other people's fleets

I have used these product for 14 years and it is really, really, really that good.

Go to a local Porsche or Ferrari shop and try to obtain some. There is one Local Volvo Shop here that uses it

and Los Gatos Ferrari is a customer. http://www.losgatosluxcars.com/

Hash marks still there on a rebuilt 50,000 rebuilt 3.0 Mitsubishi motor, 714 Transmission Fluid (Standard on Porsche GT2 and GT3) in a Grand Voyager Transmission and never a glitch even though driven very swiftly. Mazda 323 transmission which stop and going again and on and on... I apologize if you are not a hardcore Volvo guy (I like Volvo's now that I own one but more so a car guy in general) as I hope I did not give you too much info.

Never heard of this stuff but it looks very interesting. I'm going to try a Swepco regimen at my next oil change. My 98 V70 LPT runs great and has no blowby even at 165000 miles and I want to keep it running this way.

I hope you'll provide some feedback after you have tried it. It would really help the guys with high mileage Turbo cars!

Jon, it's real important to clean out the block ports and flame trap. Many of these cars have never had their PCV system replaced so it's best to just replace the entire system the first time. After you do that, if it's still smoking you may want to run some seafoam in it.

Just be very, very, very careful with the Seafoam. You can Google and see damaged vehicles. If you are not careful you can damage the engine because it is like having water in your combustion chamber and bending or seizing things if you use the Vacuum port method. It reminds me of the old timers cleaning bad knocks from Valve deposit by poring water down a fast running carburetor :o . Shock me the first time I saw it as they used an anti-freeze container and just gushed it into a fast revving motor with lots of noise and smoke like Seafoam. You can't get in trouble with a gas tank additive.

you need to remove oil trap again and drop oil pan to clean out the port from the trap to the pan this can only be done with the pan down and dont forget to replace all o-rings in the pan and pick up tube before reinstall

Hi volvodoc,

Not sure how profuse the smoke is but if JonFreeman938 decided to go in again to look at the Oil Trap wouldn't it be more prudent to pick up some clear hoses at Lowe's for around $0.40 a foot and attached it to the block and blow into it. It seems a lot of work to pull the pan to verify whether it is block or not? From what I can tell from the web on pans that may work.
