'99 V70 Shift cable adjustment

Post by precopster »

I just put an earlier AW 50-42 gearbox in my '99 V70 and now apart from the trans cooling lines not having the same mounting points/brackets the PNP is located around 4mm closer to the mounting holes for the trans shift bracket.

This means I need to adjust the cable but I have not been able to. Every time I hold it with locking pliers and try to turn the cable to adjust it on its thread it seems that a huge amount of force is required to turn it. Is there somewhere on this yellow plastic area I should put pressure on to release its grip on the cable?

Any comments/experience welcome
cheers Mike

If anyone has tackled this cable adjustment it would sure come in handy to know how it's done.

It ended up being a very easy adjustment had I simply unclipped the yellow plastic from the opposite side. I broke the yellow plastic while getting it out (feel silly now) and ended up sawing 4mm off and epoxy gluing the unit back together.

It turns out that the reason for the 4mm change in length is not attributed to the position of the cable bracket on the gearbox at all but the shift lever itself has the slot cut for the selector shaft at a different angle from the 850 when compared to the '99 V70. If I had simply swapped the selector shaft from the '99 gearbox it would have saved me a ton of time.

I know this is an old thread, but can you share with me how you take it off? I have the same thing on mine and can't seem to figure it out.

Also, any idea where to get a replacement end? The bushing in mine is toast and I need to replace it.

Thanks!

Ok, figured it out. If you put a screw driver on other ends, and twist it, it'll get it out.

You can either pry the yellow thing up with your fingernails or a small flat knife / screwdriver, or very easily push it up from the other side. It is very easy to do.

Replacing the cable isn't all that difficult either, seems those center plastic bushings on the old style pnp lever rust up and then mess with the cable adjuster mech and self destruct.
They came out with a new cable in 2002 and a new lever on the pnp which actually lasts a lot longer.

Does anyone know if the new cable #30759238 and the new lever # 30735713 are a direct replacement?
