1995 850 Turbo Wagon - $500 Adventure

Post by Oddbob » Sat Jun 22, 2013 10:04 pm

This is what my friend recently bought - a 1995 850 Wagon, Turbo, with 190k miles on the clock... with a "blown headgasket."

Here are some pictures from the fun - the beginning of the adventure.

The car itself - body is in fairly good shape.
Image

We towed it back to his house and started dissecting the engine.
Image

We then saw this.
Image

Image

We took the rest of the engine out and the transmission too. The oil was leaking so badly, that it came down from the top of the head, past the spark plug, and into the cylinder, where it slowly ruined the piston and caused it to fail. It did have a blown head gasket, but it seems that wasn't the real problem.

The turbo also looked like it was the site of the BP oil spill, along with all of the intercooler pipes. Pretty gnarly.
Image

Tomorrow morning we are going to look for a new engine at Pull A Part.

Just wanted to share the pictures!

Good luck I start my own in a.m.

Hopefully my cylinder walls are more friendly.

Bags519, I hope you did well. I think we got lucky today.

Today we found a donor car - same year and engine, with slightly more miles. It was the only Turbo 850 on the entire lot.
Image

We freed the engine in just an hour and a half. Not too bad, but the process to take these engines out isn't that difficult to begin with.
Image

Because both of us were worn out, we got the engine to my friends house, bought an engine stand, and got it out of the truck... and that's it! Immediately we can see this engine is in better shape than the original, despite having more miles on it. Check out the turbos...
Image

I even found something for my 850! Rare-ish front bumper cover with fog light holes... The foglights them selves were trashed, and I've heard they are garbage, so I left them behind, and stole the brackets for them.
Image

He'll first be taking the new engine apart to see what needs to happen. But he will be changing the engine mounts, timing belt, gaskets, etc all while its out of the car.

I dunno if I'll get those pictures.

A little update on the state of the 850 I bought. This is going to be picture heaven...

As you know the #2 cyl wall was toast and I'm sure this had something to do with it...
Image

So it was time to get a new heart
Image

Image

I got the new engine up on the stand and took the head off to see what I was working with and thankfully all 5 cyl were in good condition
Image

Image

I got the pistons all cleaned up and looking like new over the next few days
Image

Before I took the engine apart I did a cyl leakdown test and found that all but the #4 cyl had a heavy exhaust leak and I think this just may have had something to do with it
Image

So I removed all the valves and lapped them and replaced the stem seals while I was at it since the old ones were quite hard and I'm sure were leaking
Image

Last night it was time to get the head back on the engine but anyone that has taken a head off or put one on with the engine on a stand will know that it likes to move a bit, so I strapped the stand to a post in my garage then ran two lines one to the hitch on the 850 the other to another post to hold it still worked a treat.
Image

Lower portion of head on and torqued, head bolts make quite the racket during that final turn...
Image

I then had to put the upper head and cams on. I'm not much interested in the roll your own cam locks so I got myself a kit from amazon which also includes the press tools to cinch the upper down to the lower head. The kit also makes removal much easier.
Image

And here is how the engine now stands still missing an oil pan at the moment but that will probably be on later today so long as I have a pickup tube seal that will fit.

Looks just like the one I found.

I was lucky and didn't need a new motor, but it looks like yours is coming along nicely.
I even found something for my 850! Rare-ish front bumper cover with fog light holes... The foglights them selves were trashed, and I've heard they are garbage, so I left them behind, and stole the brackets for them.
The bumper cover is really not so rare for the fact that there are visible templates to cut the holes yourself.
Unfortunately it looks like you didn't get the truly rare part of the equation, which is the left trim ring #9134398 which is no longer in production, and no dealers that I have tried have any. Online or local.

What was the deal with the valve? It doesn't really look burned.

Did you replace it or just clean it up and lap it in?

My #1 cylinder on the '94 has crappy compression (about 90 lbs wet). Part of me thinks it is a stuck ring and another part of me thinks it might be a bad valve. Such that I can really see things with the bore scope the cylinder walls look OK. Since the compression is not zero I don't think I have a burned valve but your picture has me thinking I may have a similar problem.

What kind of compression numbers did you have before you yanked the head?

I got the pan and the timing parts all installed today so its looking more and more like a proper engine again, I have to order some more parts before I can really continue like the o-ring for the coolant pipe and o-ring for the oil cooling line block, its always something I forget to order...

Ben850 - thats a very nice looking wagon you got there, I hope I can get mine in that kinda shape soon, have to get its heart working before I really wanna start on the non-critical repairs it needs.

Ozark - unfortunately I didn't think to test compression until it was already on the stand and I didn't want to rig the starter on it since it bolts through to the trans and I couldn't get anything rotating it by hand. So I opted for an oldschool leakdown test we used to use on light aircraft by applying shop air to a cyl and rotating it to TDC with a breaker bar and listening for leaks, of which all but one cyl had heavy exhaust valve leakage. They weren't burnt but were coated in leaking oil from the hard valve seals, and were not properly sealing. I removed all 20 valves and lapped them and replaced the stem seals. Did the compression value you got change when you added the oil?

All of the cylinders increased wet vs dry but not by much. The "good" cylinders increased by about 10 PSI and the bad one went up by about 5 PSI.

Oil pan installed and new filter fitted to keep trash out, I will prime it before first start.

Timing parts installed and checked, I have the cover installed now but didn't take a picture

@ Ozark - Ya, a increase that small leads me to believe that you have a valve or two that are no longer seating properly, do you have access to a air compressor? If so you can attempt a cyl leakdown test like I did and pinpoint where exactly the leak is.
