Rear bumper bracket - bolt broke 982831 6816114

Post by erikv11 » Sun Jul 21, 2013 10:57 am

The rear bumper brackets on my 95 are totally rusted out and it is sagging. I bought the parts a couple weeks ago and thought i would do the job today (see jreed's great DIY at http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=49802, I didn't want to clutter that thread).

So the rivets and side mount bolts came off fine, then I moved to remove the long bolts and the first one sheared right off, no excessive force applied. Here is the sheared bolt next to a new one:

As you can see, the bolt had rusted away to like half the diameter of the original one. That explains why it broke so easily.

So ... any ideas how to get the bumper off and complete the job? I'm assuming the portion of the bolt that remains will prevent the bumper from coming off but I didn't have time to try to investigate more, needed to reattach the bumper sides temporarily and use the car.

How much of the original bracket is left? If they are anything like mine are you can likely pry the support bracket out in chunks until the bumper comes free.

Yes. If you are using new brackets, simply bend the bottom of the old brackets downward . You can then slide the bumper downward off of what is left of the broken bolts.

That is what I did here on the sedan when I found a nice, rare white '93 bumper for it at the yards.

I went through the same thing. Installed new brackets and bolts as well (got the car from up north). When I installed my un-rusted brackets I cut a grove in the lower part of the bumper to allow water to drain off and not sit in that area. Probably the only place Volvo messed up with drainage.

Thanks for the posts, very helpful! The other bolt broke in pretty much the same place but with the tips I was able to get the old bumper off pretty easily.

The brackets were incredibly rusted away, much worse than the ones Ben's picture shows, I think rust was all that was holding the bumper on. But underneath it is clean and I mounted up the new brackets. Unfortunately I ordered the long bolts for a wagon, they are about an inch shorter than the sedan ones. I will get long bolts from the machine supply shop tomorrow and button it up.

I got lucky on this job and my bumper came off with most of the metal crumbling away.

Once you have the bumper off on the bench, a tickle on the top mounted nut with H-C=C-H and it zipped off

My drivers side bolt snapped like Erik's, so I had to bend the remains of the lower flange of the bracket down to drop the assembly. The right side was no problem, it was completely gone except for the mount plate that bolts to the chassis.

What makes the job harder is if you round off the head of the remains of the long bolt. Since I was concerned that was going to happen, I used the next smaller size socket and pounded it onto the rusty bolt head. It went on far enough that I could get enough torque on it to snap it off.

BTW: Tasca still sells the brackets for the 850 wagon. They're around $15.00. Extra for the bolts. Both sides are the same.

For my 93 854, left side is no longer available. Not sure if the later 854's are also side specific, or if those are available.

Added part numbers to thread title for search

Jim, my 99 were side specific. The bolt holes are offset so the bracket will only go one side.

Corrodion really saved me hours of work on this one, once I drilled the rivets only my zip ties were holding the bumper on. There is some weight carried by the plastic side on the side of the car

It was a joy to see how nicely the bumper slid back on and aligned , even though it’s has 20 years of hard labour. Volvo fasteners are awesome too, high quality steel.

All 854's have different left and right side rear bumper brackets. For that detail and basically ALL part numbers, go to the linked thread at the top, started by jreed. Everything is very well documented.
