98 V70 AWD Blown Head Gasket/Engine Refresh

Post by jcdillin »

Hello Everyone!

So I just picked up a 98 V70 AWD, it has 199k on the clock and a blown head gasket. The car is rust free and the interior is in great shape.

I'm in the process of pulling the engine to do the head gasket, I figure while I have it out I will do the front and rear crank seals along with the oil pickup seals and the transmission pump seal.

This is the list I currently have, anything else I should add while I have it out?

Volvo Crankshaft Seal Rear (850 S60 S70 V70 XC70 XC90) - Genuine Volvo 31339213
Volvo Engine Cylinder Head Bolt (850 960 S40) - Reinz 6842347
Volvo Oil Sump O-Ring Kit (850 S60 S70 S80 V70 XC70 XC90) - Victor Reinz 30750783
Silicone Gasket Maker (850 S60 S80 V70 XC70 XC90) - Genuine Volvo 1161059
Volvo Timing Belt Kit (850 S70 V70 C70) - VOLTBKIT11
Volvo Oil Pump Gasket Kit - Genuine Volvo 271439
Volvo Head Gasket Set (850 C70 S70 V70) - Reinz 275254
Volvo AT Front Pump Seal - Aceomatic 9495017
Volvo Drive Axle Seal (AWD Models) Corteco 30735126

Thanks!

All the coolant hoses & lines, the CBV on the turbo, and the PCV system. Check all the motor mounts too. They're due for replacement.

I would not use the Reinz kit...I did and the valve seals suck. They began leaking in about 6 months. I would use a factory head gasket as well

I agree on the Reinz point about the gaskets, including the sump seals. Buy Volvo. I know it adds extra cost but you are saving so much by doing it yourself ...

The gasket maker you can save $20 by going with Permatex, people say it is fine, but I have only used the Volvo brand there.

I have never heard of Aceomatic seals, can not advise on that one.

Sounds fun!

Thanks for the replies!

Does anyone have a suggestion on someone that carries a Volvo HG kit? I could only find the HG itself. I'll check around to see on the sump kit.

I don't think I have ever seen a Volvo head gasket kit, pretty sure you have to piece it together.

spark plug tube seals (5)
valve stem seals (20)
water pipe gasket
thermostat housing gasket
head gasket
throttle body gasket
cam seals (order Corteco on these, no need to go Volvo)
dipstick tube o-ring
turbo seals (see the turbo hose threads)

And for sure I may be forgetting something.

If you buy all of the Volvo parts from Tasca or some other online dealer source, that will be your cheapest option but you may have to shop around. They will have the sump kit too.

Corteco is OEM!
Reinz: I'd stay away.

The shop I took my 1996 850 head to ordered a Fel-Pro head gasket kit for the valve seals. I got the opened kit when I got the head. It has everything in for gaskets as far as I can tell. The shop paid close to $200 for it, but I see the exact same kit on O'Reilly's website for $138.

I searched for 1998 Volvo V70 gasket kit and they're out there. Fel-Pro, Beck/Arnley, and Victor Reinz.

Yeah at this point I think i'm going to piece together a OEM HG kit, I really would rather not take this thing apart for another 200k. I may spend an extra $100 now and save myself $500 later.

The valve stem seals from Volvo are pretty expensive, unfortunately.

You aren't kidding! Cheapest i've found so far is $5.23 from Tasca, that stings a bit.
