I rebuilt my alternator recently and thought I botched the job as a growl came back from underhood.
This morning Ive tracked it down with my trusty Nautic Blue colored hose, and it is, in fact the CVVT hub on the exhaust side making the noise.
No codes, but here is the giveaway.
On cold start, the noise comes on about 3 seconds after start - when the oil pressure goes up and pressurizes the CVVT hub.
My T5 has CVVT exhaust only - since Im up to 175k miles, I might do water pump too.
The sound is a low frequency whir-whir-whir-whir like low speed blender
