Question about Front IPD Anti Sway Bar Mount Kit (98 S70)

Post by theWIFES_S70 » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:01 am

Hey all,
Was wondering about this kit I just saw on IPD. Has anyone installed it? Does this involve just taking off a few bolts and putting something new in? Is it that simple? These bushing on my wife's car as so cracked and loose. Or does this only go with the whole $400 IPD kit?

If you look at the diameter of the bushes you will see they are 25mm (1" approx.). The standard Volvo anti-sway bars come in 3 sizes: 20, 21 and 21.5mm, so these bushes won't fit your car unless you have the IPD anti-sway bar.

The Volvo bushes are vulcanised (bonded) to the bar, whereas the IPD version has to be greased frequently (they say every 6 months).

I have not changed a anti-sway bar yet on a FWB P80 or 850 model. I know for the AWD it requires dropping the front sub-frame at the back to remove the bar. I'm confident you need to do the same with FWD also. There used to be someone who sold a replacement bush for the Volvo bar but don't know who if anyone does now. Maybe someone else will chime in with more details for you.

Oh wow, thanks Neil! Of course it wouldn't be as easy as replacing a few bolts! Maybe I should just squirt some black polyurethane in there (a-la DIY motor mount fix). I can't believe it would hurt any and if we got a little more stability in the front, that would be great.

I can't believe you have to grease that IPD thing every few months...

I have written I am not a fan of IPD products of late, and a couple of weeks ago removed the front IPD ant-sway bar as it wouldn't stop groaning even after 2 sets of new bushes. Now all is quiet as I also had the dealer remove the IPD end-links which were also noisy. They had only about 3-4000km on them and one ball end on each were already getting loose. There are those who love their stuff (as I did) and those that don't. Each to their own!

I can't imagine what it was like taking out that anti-sway bar... You went back to your original? Or did you get a new OEM version?

Went back to a very good condition Volvo used one I had stashed from a PnP visit. It was from a 2000 V70XC which have the thickest option at 21.5mm. As an engineer I appreciate that diameter doesn't always translate to stiffness of the anti-sway bar, but there is no info out there. I have worked on the theory that as the XC is jacked up on the suspension, it is more rolly-polly it needs more help in the stability department, so would have the thickest and strongest version.

Either way I now have an OE bar in the car and I'm currently using Meyle HD end-links from FCP. They were initially creaky, but after several hundred km's of use have quietened down. If I have further issues I will return to OE end-links.

Good luck!

This totally sounds like something to look for at a PNP. Thanks for the heads up. Now, I need to find one! (Nothing to be found here in NYC!)

You do know that its not uncommon for suspension components to have fittings that need to be greased, right?

Actually, I've never greased struts or shocks, inner or outer tie rods, or sway ends, or upper and lower torque mounts. Nor have any of the tutorials I've looked at said anything about greasing any of these pieces. So no, I didn't know you're supposed to slather grease onto everything! I do know that some pieces have zerk fittings and those are supposed to be greased. But I haven't bought or installed any pieces like that. If that IPD kit needs to be lubed every couple of months, I don't think that's for us. I grateful to scot850 for that heads up. I would rather pick up a good used part from an XC and install that.
