Trans Flushing/Draining

Post by warmblood58 » Thu Mar 17, 2016 2:10 pm

I think because my fluid is a little more brown than red I am simply going to drop 3.5 qt via the pan, replace that amount and repeat again in 500-1000 miles. and then repeat again. My 740T had no problem with a flush but I knew more about that car's history. Normally, I would flush via the trans cooler line but I have decided to be a little more cautious and enjoy my current luck streak. This 95 T5 has over 200 thousand on it and while I was led to believe that the previous owner was good with maintenance items, the trans fluid does not reflect this. I once did a flush on a Mercedes years ago and lost trans function as the fluid in that car had just enough debris in it for the clutch plates to grab . . . better safe than sorry. Any members do the complete flush and lose trans function? Just curious, thanks!

With unknown maintenance history you are on the right track. Follow your plan to change out a little at a time.

I used a clear food service container - drained off 3.5 and filled. The stuff was more like light chocolate. . . .not reddish but did not smell burnt either . . . we shall see . . .

I did the same thing when I bought my '97 850. With the available drain plug, I spread out the drains by a week or so (500 miles) and noticed a difference in shifting, and no adverse effects. That was about 15,000 miles ago. Still going strong.

I've seen a trans fluid flush on a used auto w/100k go bad and I've seen them go good but why risk it. Unless they have documents stating it was done at every interval I'm sticking with the drain/fills. My father in-law is so skeptical he won't even drain and fill but doesn't understand why all his transmissions fail eventually... Lol!!! I've dove about 4 drain/fills on my '98xc.

If using volvo atf, be prepared to bring your first born, a left testie, and KY. Liquid gold is what I've concluded volvo used in there automatics.
