non-turbo 850 fuel pump relay ballast resistor

Post by ordgoyo » Mon Mar 21, 2016 12:14 pm

Hello,
Can anyone tell me what and why there is a ballast resistor in the wiring for the non-turbo 850? it seems to piggyback from the 87b terminal

What year is the car are you working on? There are two versions of the fuel pump relay. On version (the common one) has four pins and the other version has five pins with a large and a small terminal off of the 87 position. I have used the 4 pin relay in the 5 pin socket and it works just fine. I never dug in under the fuse box to see what the difference was. If there is a resistor there it would likely server as a current limiter to protect the wiring in the event that the pump shorted out. I don't think it is mission critical but I would need to see it in the schematic to verify that.
