Sputters, stalls, dies, hesitates - post Fuel Pressure Regulator replacement

Post by M4rinus » Tue Apr 12, 2016 1:51 pm

Hey,

Yesterday I started to smell fuel.
Thinking it was likely a busted injector, I finished my remaining mile to work.
Once parked I lifted the hood and noticed fuel gushing out of the vacuum line port on the fuel pressure regulator.
After turning off the engine, later in the day it wouldn't start at all. Bought a new FPR, and replaced the old one.
It took a while to catch on and start, but when it did there was a massive enduring white cloud coming from the exhaust.
I kept it over 2500 rpm, and eventually the engine sound smoothed out.

However the moment it drops below 2000 it starts to have trouble.
If it idles, it only idles normally for 10 seconds or so, it starts to have trouble.
It stutters, hesitates, almost dies and revives again or dies all together.

When it dies, it starts fine as long as I add gas with my foot. But if I just turn over the key and try to just get it to start, it will die right away.

I tried driving it around the parking lot. As long as I keep my RPM up, it's fine. But as soon as I slow or stop, it gets itself into trouble and usually ends up dying.

What could this be?
Is it because fuel ended up in the vacuum line ?
What else could it be ?

I am completely out of ideas.

Could it be the Idle Air Control Valve ? Damaged ? Soaked in gas ? Something ?

older fuel pressure regulator would cause fuel in vac lines, diaphram leak
