2000 xc p0455 rubber flange by filler neck

Post by DrJammer » Tue May 10, 2016 3:33 pm

Hi all. I am totally avoiding my p0455. Fearing this may end up be charcoal canister but before I do anything..... I noticed the rubber flange by the filler neck is torn. Could this cause p0455? Is this repairable by a DIY guy and without dropping tank? I had the fuel pump replaced 2 years ago by non Volvo shop and if I need to drop tank for a repair I want to get fuel level sender properly done.

That will indeed cause the P0455 (gas cap) evap leak code. I really don't know if that can be replaced without dropping the tank a XC but, unless someone beats me to it, I will fire up another computer to get to VIDA and see what they say.

I don't believe this causes a problem. It fits to the outside of the fuel filler pipe to fill the gap around the pipe and to channel any splashes of fuel down a small hole.

Attached below is a picture of the rubber 'neck' after dropping the rear suspension on my 2000 'R'.

I believe you could replace this by removing the gas cap, removing the lock ring at the outside edge (it is a large round stainless ring with a short part missing to allow it to compress to remove). And the rubber ring should come out.

I think I said before to check the pipe very carefully from the carbon can to the roll over valve as it can split.

Well thank for the replies, but I have completely opposite answers from 2 of the most respected voices on here. I feel like I am at work.....

And sorry the photo is upside down, I generated the post from my phone and it looked fine in the preview.

So basically last year, I had a bit of trouble passing emissions and the local shop showed me a pic of where the emission issue was coming from and the diagram basically pointed to the carbon can AREA.

Ideally, rubber flange replacement would take place w/o tank drop and would resolve P0455.

Can someone direct me a bit better to inspect/work in the carbon canister area on an AWD model? It is so tight I am just not sure how to get up and check the valves and hoses coming off.

Thanks again

I totally agree with Scot850. That part is completely independent of the filler cap seal and is superfluous to the monitored emissions system. I'm betting OzarkLee didn't know exactly what part you were referring to when he answered.

Heck, I've been wrong many times! I will try to find the spare filler tube and take some photos for you. Still stand with my view though!

The filler cap has the seal you need to worry about.

The only way to remove the fuel filler pipe is if you can access the upper pipe clamp on the rubber hose that goes into the fuel tank. Be aware the rubber hose is obsolete!
