94 850-Center caps won't fit over axles with new wheels. Options?

Post by IG-88A » Sat May 21, 2016 7:21 am

So, I decided to retire the Columbas to snow tire only duty, and found myself a very nice set of S60 Balder 17" wheels locally. I got them bored out from 63.4mm to match the 850's 65.1mm center bore. I also picked up a set of Continental DWS. Got them back from the shop yesterday, and thought I'd be in business. I've installed the fronts so far, and they look great and fit just as I'd hoped. Except for the fact that I can't put the center caps on the fronts now because the axles protrude too far out with these wheels. Maybe about 1/2" too far. Wondering if anyone had any ideas or knew of any Volvo center caps that would fit but are made a bit deeper to accommodate this. I know I've seen these wheels with caps on a P80 S70 before, and now I'm wondering how they pulled it off. I tried both the S60 caps that came with the wheels and my original 850 caps so far.

I'm thinking maybe you need spacers for those wheels? Otherwise, you'll most likely have to use different center caps... Are your wheels not too far in?

I think they sit just fine in front. They seem to be pretty much flush with the mud flap. Not sure I could get away with a spacer up there. Maybe 5mm at best, which still wouldn't get me where I'd be able to fit the caps. In the rear I've obviously got plenty of room. I hope the pics are decent enough. I wonder if there's maybe some sort of an extension of sorts that can clip into the wheel then I can clip the caps to that. Might look goofy, but I can't see any other option here aside from cutting material off the end of the axles. And I'm not really sure if that's a good idea or not. Are there any other caps out there that anyone knows of that might work?

Yeah, your tires look good- flush with everything. I suppose that if they turn okay without hitting the wheel lock you're okay. I"ve just never seen anything like it. Your new wheels must be thinner in the center spot than Volvo wheels. You might find something more of this style that might fit:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-CAP-DEAL-1302 ... f4&vxp=mtr It would be a no-name but they do sell center cap Volvo stickers you could then apply.

I believe these are from a 2010 S60.
Those caps are the right idea. But I won't need nearly that much room. Not to mention, that they would look quite conical. Something maybe twice as thick as the existing ones ought to be fine. Thanks though. I'll keep digging and see what i can come up with. Its such a peculiar thing I never even thought I'd encounter when using another Volvo wheel.

Are the axles Volvo originals?

As for the left one, I have no clue, as I've never personally replaced it. The right one is not OEM, as I just replaced it not too long ago. Both stick out a slightly different amount, but both do stick out enough to not allow caps.

I think I've finally solved the mystery. It appears that later Volvos use an axle bolt, a bolt that threads into the axle rather than a big ol' axle nut that threads onto the axle. Much more clearance when using the bolt, as there isn't a bunch of threads hanging out the end. As a result, it appears they designed these wheels with just enough space to fit the head of the axle bolt, and not much more. Live and learn I suppose.

You could cut/grind the extra threads off to get the caps to fit on the front.

I was wondering if that was a possibility or not. Another thing I'm now wondering is if I could use the later axles? It appears that the change from axle nut to axle bolt happened in '99. Would '99 s/v70 axles fit an 850 no problem? I'm thinking they should. But I'd like to be sure.
