Volvo 850 front control arm question

Post by scot850 » Sat Jun 25, 2016 12:19 am

Does anyone know if the old aluminum control arms as fitted to 93/94 850's fit later models? I recall having a 93 850 GLT with aluminum control arms and they were replaced by regular control arms. Reason for asking was at PnP the other day there was a car with aluminum control arms and all the regular ones had bad ball joints. Trying to keep cost to a minimum on my new project, and cheaper to buy new ball-joints tan control arms.

Thanks guys. Also repairable with $25 ball-joints not $110 whole control arms! Now just have to hope they are still there. We have rain for the next few days and then the PnP gets really soupy!

So I picked up to of the early design aluminum control arms and they need new bushings and ball-joints. Ball-joints I am ok with identifying, but does anyone know if the bushes for the 2 bolt mounts are the same as for the newer design?

Thanks,

Neil.

If you mean same as the 4-bot, no. But the same bushing will work for all p80 2-bolt arms https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 70-271631l

Keep in mind that the aluminum arms are weaker than the steel once. I wouldn't recommend them if your streets have lot of pot holes.

Sorry to jump onto this thread, but I was wondering if anyone ever developed an after-market ball joint to be pressed into Volvo control arms. I know bushings can be had for next to nothing... When I took mine off, the ball joins and bushings were shot. But I tell you, there was not a speck of rust to be found anywhere on it! Unlike the Febis I have in there now, the OEM control arms looked almost brand new...
