1996 855T M56 problem? (Inner axle shaft failure)  Topic is solved

While driving my 1996 855T M56 today, it lost all power output from the transmission. It happened between 1st and 2nd upshift with no noticeable sounds or crunches. The car now acts like its stuck in neutral permanently and the gear selector doesn't seem to do anything. I can see the linkage is moving at the transmission However. So did this thing grenade internally? Anything I can look at first before removing the gearbox and throwing it down a ravine? The clutch, PP & bearing all have less than 500 miles on them.

Make sure that the axle didn't pop out, particularly the left hand side.

It appears to be in there OK. I can't accurately measure but it looks like an 1/8th" clearance between the fat part of the inner axle and the trans..

Jack up the front two wheels and see whats spinning.

A new clutch job? Could be something has grenaded there - more likely than the trans, I think.

So it was a sheared axle inside the trans. Snapped off right at the spot for the retaining ring!
Anybody have a preferred axle supplier/brand?

Carquest isn't bad, I've used them before in my V70 and never had issues with them.

Ive got a left hand side one in my stores from when I ruined my original doing the FWB.

Do you need the car back on the road stat?

Ill donate it for karmic points if you are tight on budget, or sell cheap if you arent.

Raxles no longer rebuilds Volvo axles. He couldn't get good cores which is a shame, they were the absolute best.
