Starting issue (Bad aftermarket MAF) new Bosch MAF worked Topic is solved
About six months ago my 98 v70 would choke and sputter like it was running bad fuel. If I kept the RPM's up it would work through the problem and be ok. If my RPM's dropped below 1200, the car would die and not restart right away without a small miracle. I am not a mechanic but thought I would try and help myself and tackle a few things. I replaced the MAF, O2 sensor, cleaned the throttle body, spark plugs, wires, thermostat, coolant temperature sensor, pcv system and fuel pump relay (tested-used). The original problem seems to have either retreated or been resolved. Now, the car stars perfect every morning, every subsequent start required keeping the ignition engaged. It seems like something misses on the first try and then it fires up. I am not pressing the gas pedal. Starter solenoid? Fuel pump? Fuel filter? Injectors? Distributor? Low tire pressure? User error? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Starting issue
Codes! Read codes! Throwing parts at these cars in the dark gets very expensive, extremely fast. Did I mention that you need to read your codes?

The only code I get is the air blower motor.

Re: Starting issue
Then it could be your henway. But start by seeing if your problem gets better or worse by disconnecting the MAF - are you sure there are no vacuum leaks?

"Henway?" -- a few pounds. Rimshot. Try the veal. Don't forget to tip your waitress, I'm here through Thursday. . .

Re: Starting issue
Get a fuel pressure gauge and watch the pressure at the rail.
Cheaper way , when you get the hard start, give it a 2 second shot of starter fluid into the manifold to see if it then fires
You are trying to isolate fuel from ignition problems on the diagnostic tree.

Re: Starting issue
Starter fluid downstream from the maf?
I am picking up a fuel filter and replacing it this afternoon. I tackled this job on a 89 740 and it was a pain in the neck, looks to be easier on this car.
I will report tomorrow.
