You are correct that many people have reported that an S70 arm fixes the problem on an 850. But yes, the info from dosbricks is not to be discarded, either. I have never tried to sort out the issue(s), so that one is a question mark for me. I have an extra S70 arm in the garage, may get around to putting it on one of my 850's eventually ...

The issue w/the S70 upgrade is I THOUGHT (maybe wrong) was only certain model years should be used as an 850 replacement. Is this true?? And which model years should be used.

There seems to be a little ridge that prevents the arm from touching properly as that lever ages and bends over time. I will try to look that up and link it here. I might give it a try on my wifes 850 where the wiper barely touches anymore and post results here.
I'd like to see that.

dosbricks wrote:I tried several different bending contortions and also the '98 S70 passenger wiper arm for the driver side 850. The latter contacted (by height) the hood at the end of the down stroke. None of that worked to give a good clean wipe.

Finally I stumbled across the method for reducing (I used a Dremel tool) just a bit off the two little bumps under the arm that act as the limit for how tightly the springs can pull the arm down toward the windshield. This increased the spring pressure against the windshield and have had a full sweep clean wipe ever since no matter how light or heavy the rain. I think this method is discussed somewhere on MVS.
This is interesting, I'll have to take a look under my wiper arm to see what region you are talking about. I don't believe I have come across this method on MVS, but if it's here, I hope I can find it. I've searched before, so maybe it came out after I did a lot posting.

Thanks for this info

Bend the arm up at the hinge, you will see the two little nubs dos is talking about. Can't miss 'em.

This is now a serious issue for xHeart -- help.
A good 1/3 driver's vision is left untouched by the DS wiper with new blade - rain is here, snow is coming. It gets dark around 5:00 p.m.
Any pix of the "two little bump"?

I swapped in '98 passenger side wiper arms to my 850's drivers side and all is good. The springs that hold the new arms to the windshield are also different, which might help with cleaning.
My 98 replacements installed at the same position as the originals were slightly nudging the back edge of the hood. Reinstalling them a couple of degrees lower (one spline position?) in off position fixed that, so they clear the hood edge now. When off they still rest on the glass.

It is the two lighter colored nubs at the base of the spring-attachment-loop, down at the base of the arm. Shave some material off the top surface that is parallel to the sky:

I took the cowl cover off mine and unbolted the whole wiper mechanism (3 bolts). Then I used two washers under the forward bolt which rotated the posts toward the windshield a degree or two resulting in better contact for both wipers.

I know we all have to find the path to Volvo enlightenment that is right for us. But for those still wrestling with this issue, if you own or can borrow a Dremel tool, it's super easy to relieve about 1mm or less from those two nubs shown at the right of Erik's photo. The result is a totally clean wipe at zero cost.
