1993 850 GLT engine dies while turning and accelerating

Post by tincanman » Tue Aug 23, 2016 1:52 pm

Hi,

I have a 1993 850 GLT and an interesting problem occurred this morning. I was turning right (90 degree turn at a stop light) and accelerating, and just when I was finishing the turn (straightening out the steering), the engine dies. I was giving the car light gas through the entire turn and the engine was probably somewhere between 1.5 to 2.5k RPM. The engine didn't stutter or jerk. It's almost as if I turned the ignition off. When the engine died, all of the lights on the dash were flashing. So I pulled off to the side stopped the car, put it in park, and turned the car off. Waited about 5 secs and started the car back up just fine. I drove for about 10 min afterwards to get to work.

What are the possible causes for this? I searched the forum and most people with engine stalling problems experience it at idle or at a stop. My engine died while I was accelerating, which is very strange. I'm guessing that it might be an electrical issue (ie. faulty ignition relay) since the engine died without any stutters.

The car has about 145k miles and has had the fuel pump replaced within the past year (so it's unlikely fuel pump issue as what other posts suggest). Has anyone experienced these exact symptoms before?

Thanks

Possible fuel pump relay. Unfortunately, a one-time scenario is often hard to diagnose.

I'd like to try and reproduce this issue. If I have the car parked and in idle, and then I pull the fuel pump relay (or fuse), will I damage the engine?

I'm going try and read the fault codes tonight and see if I get anything.
