94 850 Turbo Wagon started stalling while idling/stopped

Post by Cbruns850 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 10:31 pm

Hi,

Just recently been having issues with my 1994 850 Turbo 5 DR Wagon AW50-42. It is stalling out while idling or between 1,000-2,000 RPMs. Been reading forums and researching what might cause this, haven't been able to find a clue as to what is going on. I've tried checking codes to see if there are any errors but I'm not very understanding of what the codes mean. It has full fluids, recently changed the oil/oil filter. It's progressively gotten worse to the point that now I can't even go out the driveway without it stalling, and the last attempt to start it a belt started squeaking super loud that never squeaked before (timing belt + water pump replaced in 2012, not more than 8k miles put on it since then.. Bought it from an old lady who used it as a grocery getter and kept it in immaculate condition). Sounded like it might be the camshaft belt? Or the timing belt, which I hope it isn't. I've checked all fuses if that made any difference to begin with and none were worn or blown. Heard there's a chance it could be a sensor or fuel pump(s). Any suggestions on pointing me in the right direction to get this solved would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello,
A few things that I would check would be the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys. If they weren't changed when the belt was or if they are substandard replacements they might be worn out or seized causing the squealing from either the belt rubbing against the seized pulley or the bearings in the pulleys starting to seize and making the squealing. If your car still starts and runs even though it makes the loud squeal the timing belt or camshaft belt as you called it hasn't broke yet but may need a complete timing kit if this is causing the problems and if you are unsure of what parts were replaced when the belt was done. A complete kit comes with the belt both pulleys and water pump.
The turbo is another thing to check. If there is sludge buildup or oil coking occurring the bearings in the turbo can squeal as they start to seize from lack of lubrication. This could also be causing the problems you mentioned as well.
Using conventional oils will cause sludge buildup over time and high turbo temperatures combined with the use of conventional oil causes oil coking.

There's quite a few things that could be the matter, from a bad MAF and/or connector, to a dead IAC (Idle Air Control valve), to more hassle-packed things like a seized pulley or component on either the timing or serpentine belt (the one running power steering pump, alternator, AC, etc.).

With these cars, you ALWAYS troubleshoot BEFORE throwing parts at them. As long as you do that, then repairs shouldn't cost you and arm and a leg. And we'll help you! ;) But the first thing is to get the trouble codes, and post them here. Don't drive the car until you/we figure out what's going on with it. :) Let's see those codes! I'm sure we can make sense of them.

Appreciate the help! And I never throw parts at it til I find the problem :) I will try and pull codes today, any specific category of codes I should look for? (Engine, transmission etc)

If there's any DTCs, they'll be helpful no matter where they're coming from. Just pull codes from all the modules, and post'em up. :)

The '94 turbo car should have the obd2 reader under the coin holder. Is the CEL on?

Anyone suggest a good code reader for the car? The scanner I have is 1996 and newer cars. :(

CEL is not on, which is why I'm puzzled as to why it's randomly stalling. Hasn't ever happened before a couple days ago.

No CEL = Fuel delivery problem.
