98 V70 NA - compare turbo and NA and/or XC CV drive axles

Post by 98v70dad »

I bought a couple of drive axles from a salvage guy for 10 bucks each. You can't beat a 10 each deal. I wasn't sure I had the right thing but these are getting rare and I figured I really couldnt lose. Someone out there will need them.

It was a good bit of work sorting through a deep pile of very greasy axles. I eventually found two that I was told would work in my car. They actually seem serviceable without doing anything to them. Since it takes a good bit of effort to remove and replace them I would at a minimum clean the old grease out, regrease and reboot them. That said, my initial plan was to send them to raxles to be rebuilt. Now I understand that Marty isn't doing turbo axles anymore. If he isn't doing turbo axles then I don't want to send him one.

So, I remember seeing a post that shows the differences between a turbo and NA axle (at least) and now after searching for a long time I can't re-find it. Does anyone have a quick link to a post like that? Thanks.

I went to the FCP site and they are showing a rebuilt axle for a V70 part number AX-8598 / Volvo part number 8251509.

They are also showing a axle new Volvo as part number 8251509 for a 1998 V70 XC AWD. These are for the right front.

So according to FCP's web site there is no difference for the right front axle between a V70 and a V70 XC AWD. They also make no mention between a N/A and turbo car.

I remember that axle posting bit I also could not find the thread. My crappy memory recalls it explained the difference between the year 2000 V70 XC axles compared to other years due to a change in the transfer case.

I hope some kind hearted person can find that thread. It was very informative.

The search engine on this site isn't the greatest. I have a tough time finding things. Google works better but I wasn't able to find anything on this site for this topic using google either. Lately when I find something I'm prettybsure I'll need later I print as a pdf to my hard drive. Then I dont have to refind it - or I just save a shortcut. I saw the axles thing about 6 months ago. The guy at the salvage place who has been doing this for 35 years and ONLY with volvo parts told me he thought they were all interchaneable (at least) and may all be the same part. I'm just trying to confirm that or figure out how to tell the difference.

I seem to recall that thread discussing the best GKN CVJ boots. May have been a CN90 post. I recall axle dia., CVJ measurements, to find the correct boot for turbo vs. non-turbo axles.
