This weekend I tackled an AC clutch re-shim on my 1999 s70.

I had the classic symptoms of AC being cold for a few moments and then it would get warm. I measured the gap and it was greater than my larger gauge which was .866 mm.

The job wasn't too bad. I basically followed many of the online videos for removing the alternator .
Some of the videos I watched have people remove the fan shroud and removing the alternator by moving it across the front of the engine and out where this is more space. On my 99 s70 I didn't have to do that. It just comes out near the ECM. Pretty darn easy.

For the puller, I follow the template here;

However, I just made it out of plywood. Worked like a charm. I did hot melt glue a fender washer onto plywood where it would make contact with the bolt screwed into the clutch so it wouldn't just sink into the plywood as I tightened the 3 5mm bolts. Popped the clutch right off. I threw the tool out by accident and never took a picture of it. Stupid me. Just a square of plywood with 3 holes drilled into it based on the template in the link above.

it turns out that someone had already been in there and had removed the medium sized shim . That's probably the one I needed as using any of the remaining shims would have left me in a Goldilocks scenario: Thick shim would have left the gap too big and the thin shim would have left the gap too small.

So I made one out of some aluminum gutter flashing.

Gap is now .4 mm and AC is cold.

Two tips.

1) Watch out for holes in the frame. There is a hole in the subframe just below the center bolt for the AC clutch. I dropped the bolt and of course it fell into the frame almost to be lost forever. So tape over the holes first.

2) I was able to feel the bolt inside the frame but I couldn't grab it. So I stuck a rare earth magnet inside my glove. Worked well

I had a few false starts with this idea as I was trying to hot melt glue or tape the magnets to some stick or rubber hose but it wasn't working. I then started thinking of some way I could attach it to my glove so I could just use my finger. And then I had that DOH! moment when I finally realized I could just put it IN the glove. No complicated attachments or anything.

I had a brief moment of fear when I worried my finger would get stuck in the hole in the frame but thankfully that embarrassing situation didn't manifest. The magnet I used is a tiny cylinder type magnet. about the size of a grain or rice. Those rare earth magnets are so powerful.

Those spherical rare earth magnets that are parts of toys would well too.

I thought back to all those bolts and nuts I've dropped in hard to reach places. A magnet in a glove would make getting those so easy.

I probably will never drop a bolt ever again.

So many applications

I just did three battery replacements on iPhones and holding those small screws just got easy

I’ll cut off a finger to make a magnetic finger cot for that next time

Not today, but over the past few weeks:

- Oil change
- DIY toe-in alignment which turned out pretty well
- Put my propshaft up for sale, since I deleted the angle gear after finding out it was broken. The propshaft had just been rebuilt, so that sucked. Ad here (based in Netherlands...): https://link.marktplaats.nl/m1418529110

Camping season preparations:
- Bought and installed a rooftop tent which is awesome for short camping trips! We love a 'ground tent' but the one we have is quite time consuming to set up, so more suitable for longer trips.
- Electrical work and planning: ordered new solar panel setup (old bulky panel I have been using doesn't combine well with the rooftop tent)
- Laid out camping kit to fit bottom drawer, ordered parts to install drinking water tank + tap in bottom drawer

Temparatures are rising, getting excited to do more road trips!

...Now fighting with master cylinder installation, and then have the long road ahead of me with the rest of the swap.

Nice! That master cylinder is a ton of fun to install...

Did you decide on yanking the whole thing out the top or dropping the trans from underneath?

Yanking the whole thing out the top. I dropped my Escape's out the bottom of the car using an engine support bar, but with the addition of having to drop the subframe and all on the Volvo I'll just as soon yank it back out the top, even though I just did that 5k ago during the engine replacement.

That's definitely how I'd do it. I feel like it's much easier to do it that way if you don't have a lift. I pulled it from the bottom last time, not doing that again!
