(Pics) Oil leaking volvo! Found oil in turbo intake tube need suggestions

Post by Sabel » Tue Nov 08, 2016 3:32 pm

Here are some images to help http://imgur.com/a/lleFz

As the title states my 2000 V70 XC is leaking a considerable amount of oil. i need to re top off about once every two weeks

I found a bit of oil splatter on the roof of my hood actually and traced it down to behind the radiator and fan from the front of the car

I removed most of the obstructions and found a fair amount of oil in the turbo intake. (or what i think is the turbo intake, i'm unsure.) and also a fair amount at the bottom of said hose that's connected to the bottom of the motor.

I am going to check the PCV system tomorrow using the "baloon" test but i'm not sure if that can cause this really.

Any help is appreciated.

It is fairly normal to have some oil in the turbo pipework, but it will get worse if the PCV is blocked or the PTC nipple. How many miles on your car?

I'd pull the hoses from the turbo to see how much oil is in them. Oil dripping from intercooler?

@ Neil It has close to 200k miles. I'm not sure what the PTC nipple is or where to find it. I'm new to working on volvos

@Eric Which part is the intercooler?

I have never had the PCV system serviced (nor done it myself) since i bought the car with 156k on it. (i wasn't aware it was a thing that needed doing until semi-recently) could that cause a fairly serious oil leak underneath the engine..?

There is also oil under the filler cap around the coil area of the engine.

I'd plan on new parts such as timing belt, water pump, and idler before addressing anything else at this point at those miles.

The oil cap should have the seal replaced semi-annually as it hardens and allows oil to end up where you have found it on the top of the engine. It eventually flows out the back of the head gallery and runs down the back of the engine. I'd replace that whatever you do as it is a slow job cleaning all the oil off the top of the motor.

The PTC nipple is on the plastic turbo air intake hose from the air-filter box. It is just on the top after the pipe bends to horizontal before entering the turbo. You have to remove the turbo intake pipe to access it to clean it. If you look at any of the PCV service how-to's they will show you what/how to clean it. It is basically a small air heater on is a hole that passes air through it. It clogs with time helping in the crankcase pressurising process of the blocked breather system.

Do the rubber glove test on the oil filler hole and see if the glove inflates or collapses with the engine running. Former is good, latter is bad!!

PCV system blockages can and will blow out any/all oil seals in the block.

I'll answer the intercooler question, it is a radiator like unit sandwiched between the A/C cooler and the radiator. In your images above, in the 3rd picture you have removed the top hose from the intercooler to the intake manifold. There is a black metal pipe that runs over the top of the engine from the back at the turbo, and then down to the lower left of the radiator area where it allows the air to flow up to the top of the intercooler, cooling the air.

Thank you ! Il do some more poking around tonight with this information, I actually just changed the timing belt, water pump, and idlers about 6 months ago so those should be fine. Il replace the gasket in the oil filler cap as I'm sure thats causing at least part of the buildup.
