Check Out my Exhaust Manifold Flex Pipe Repair Please...

Post by plumsmooth » Thu Nov 17, 2016 12:58 pm

Not sure if I am crazy or not; but since no one had any ideas -- and I am extremely frustrated with my Volvo right now-- I got creative and would like some feedback please.

Thanks to extension socket skills acquired from the PCV replacement last year I was fairly easily (with PB Blaster) able to get the three bolts holding the Manifold Cover on -- off... This allowed me to use both hands and get around the flex pipe thoroughly with the High Temp Silicone!

I smeared a tube of 700 copper RTV silicone gasket goop around my Flex Pipe with a pair of Latex gloves working into the groves.

I did such a good job I am considering one more tube tomorrow and a day to cure before testing it...

Wondering if I should add a band clamp around it too, especially since it seems to be almost the exact length of those (around 4 inches?)

But maybe the band clamp wouldn't do much to improve upon it? Maybe weaken it if striped to tight?

I'm frustrated because my inspection mechanic diagnosed many more things than I suspected especially Muffler and CAT holes.
But honestly after seeing smoke come out of the Flex Pipe the other day after reading up on Volvo 850 Exhaust issues and him trying to talk me into some 400 Muffler that I can get for 160 Bucks...

Does anyone know if the Exhaust Manifold can be replaced from "above". And I do not mean Divine Intervention...

Anyway I am wondering if I need to replace the whole darn exhaust chain which I am not equipped to do on the floor of my dirty driveway with Jack Stands...

Because of the sparing level of usage this vehicle gets and my Aunts V70 to be inherited next year I am really hoping some one can patch up the holes in my exhaust?

Otherwise if I could buy the three main exhaust components for around 675 and find someone with a lift to do it that would be a consideration.
But at Mechanics part cost that job would be well over 1500 Dollars. My car is barely worth that... Hence patch-job ideas please?

Anyway the way I look at it not much damage I could do here on this flex pipe. And certainly hard furnace cement was not the way to go. This stuff is drying into a nice sheath around my Flex Pipe!

I tied my whole down pipe in heat insulating wrapping tape that is usually used on the exhaust manifold.
That is a thing you could try perhaps.

my experience from other place is that heat resistant silicone tends to harden quite a bit or even worse go rock hard once warm.

This ghetto repair won't last too long b/c of the heat.

I think we linked to another DIY in your other thread by using a generic flex pipe, then ask local muffler shop to weld it for you.
Probably the most economical approach.

Maybe if I only take 20 minute trips with the Vehicle it will last longer?

Man, I hope it works. I think heat resistant tape and some large band clamps might've worked better. But I for one applaud your effort. Worst thing that happens is we all learn here collectively that this is not a way to go. Keep us posted!

What they said.

(1) +14 points for creativity and keep us posted!

(2) Next option, the cheap manifold you mentioned in one of your first posts about this problem. :) Don't forget the one-piece exhaust manifold gasket for the head side, much easier to deal with and like $15 from Volvo. You'll need a gasket for the downpipes side, too.
