Volvo 1995-96 OBD2 Reading

Hello, UK, Cornwall based
I have a 1995-96 "N" Reg Volvo 850 T5
Has a RICA Chip and I am told an 18T Turbo
I am a Trimmer so very much linked to the Motor Trad so I know many local garages.
I have only found one establishment that has the suitable machine (Bosch Software and Laptop) to Read the OBD2 Codes from my vehicle.
Is there currently available, a suitable Scanner / Reader that I can buy at a reasonable price without having to consider a Full Dealer Level macjine and software please?
Sadly I have limited funds but I would like to be able to read my own codes and if possible, use the machine for other vehicles too. I have nothing currently that is Post 2005 manufacture

Thanking you in advance

I am happy for anyone to email me to [email protected]

It is motronic 4.3,built your own flash code reader because ecu is not obdII compliant.
You can find all info at www.volvoforums.org.uk

If it is motronic 4.4(could be since it's tuned)...than Vol-fcr is all you need.

Hello Misha
Thank you for your reply.
My 1995-96 Volvo 850 T5 does actually have the OBD2 system read the Reader Data Socket under the coin tray in the centre console forward of the gear shift.
I have only found one garage in my local town that will actually read data from this car.
Obviously it is a very early full OBD2 version.
It seems that by default, most modern day machines do not have data that goes back that far to 1996.
Typically those that did have such data, on regular updating of their machines, the older data gets erased to make sufficient room for updated software / data.
I was hoping that members would be able to advise me on any set ups they know that would be able to read my car
Thank you all

Vol-FCR software should be able to read your car. I have read some engine codes using an OBD2 reader, but as misha says the car is not fully OBD2 compliant even though it has the plug under the coin tray. So the later software that does read Volvos only starts on cars from 99-.

You need a laptop, OBD2 to USB cable (I can't remember the specific one, it is a VAG cable) and the Vol-FCR software. I think you can still buy the cable on line and it comes with a software disc. It used to be $20-30 on E-bay. Hopefully someone else will chime in with the correct cable spec. I have the cable, but it has no identifier on it. Try checking in the forum on MVS here for link to the product.

Good Luck.

Neil.

@tony muse
T5 engines in 850s had Motronic 4.3 engine management and it wasn't yet fully obdII compliant.
ObdII socket you have under the coin holder is for other modules in the car....immobiliser,power seats, srs, service light reset,transmission,abs....BUT in order to read engine & ecc codes you will need flash code reader.
If it's tuned and converted to Motronic 4.4 engine management you would be able to read obdII codes via diagnostic port under coin holder....since Motronic 4.4 is fully OBD II compliant.

I know little about Volvos, but I bought a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT. After I got it Home, The Factory Alarm goes off when I try to start the Car. I tried unlocking and locking the doors with key and key fob (while all door closed)to try turning off the Factory Alarm, but NO Change. Car still wont start and alarm sounds.

Battery was recently changed before I bought the car and many idiot light on dash are already on, check engine included. I was able to jump the car before I bought it and get it running after sitting for 6 months.

On the way home after buying the car, I stopped at Autozone who told me that they Cant Scan my 1995 850 GLT car with their Scanner, SAYING my car was the old scanner type, not the newer OBD-II? So, what do I do now?

I suppose I need to get an OBD-1 Scanner and locate the Scanner Port to plug on this car.
I suppose I will read all the active codes and then Clear all the Codes to try and start the car. Maybe the Alarm will reset.
Then, if that works, I can check the codes again to see what Trouble is recurring.

Mainly, however, I need to be able to start the car, find a scanner or find a way to clear all the codes with a wire or paper clip.

Can anyone help a Newbie on Finding the Scanner port, Finding a Scanner to buy (OR even How to Trip all the Codes with a Paper clip) and Getting started.

Thank You, LVGeorge

Diagnostic ports are under the hood,at passenger's side of the car, they are attached at ecu(s) box. There are two diagnostic ports.
http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how ... es_a2.html

That new battery which sat for 6 months is completely dead and can't be recharged. That's why your car will not start and that's exactly why alarm triggers.
You need to buy a new battery for that car.
Jump start it again and disable the alarm with a fob.....it will start right on.

How you used obdII port for reading codes on a '95 when it's ecu produce flash codes?
Unless you're talking about your '95 from signature which use "R" ecu....which is actually Motronic 4.4 and it's fully obdII compatible.
Jetronic,Fenix(10v cars) and Motronic 4.3 are NOT obdII compliant.
