2000 V70 XC Can't fill gas tank

Post by BrianV70 »

Hey, I'm new here, but I found you via Robert DIY who's videos helped me with a stuck door and a heater core. The MAN.

We just had our first cold snap here in Denver - below zero overnight. Don't know if that is related or coincidence.

1. I tried to refuel on a cold morning and fuel shot out the filler neck onto the pump.

2. After a warmer day (45 F) and some gas line antifreeze, it still takes about 15 minutes to add 2-2.5 gallons. I barely squeeze the nozzle and basically let it fill up the filler pipe and then drain into the tank.

3. I have a CEL. I will buy a code reader tomorrow to see what the code is.

4. There is a fairly strong whoosh or vacuum sucking air in when I unscrew the fuel cap. I've been driving without it in case it is putting strain on the fuel pump. (And we know that replacing a fuel pump in this car is either sending it to the crusher or cutting a hole in the floor.)

Seems to be running fine.

Help please! Where should I start?

Thank you

Background, not the focus of this topic:
How we ended up with this car is a loooong story, but we love Volvos.
We are the 4th owners. It has about 120K on the chassis and maybe a bit more on the motor. Our local shop has been over the car and overall thought it was in pretty solid shape except for some deferred maintenance. They had put a used engine in for a previous owner who had it towed in. Did a bunch of other stuff too including the RMS.

My wife is pissed because we just dropped $1300 on tie rods, sway bar links, and a drive shaft (prop shaft to rear awd).

You have a tank vent that is stuck shut most likely. Search the repair database for a diagram of the EVAP system.

Thanks - I will look at those.

Update: Codes are P0446 and P0453

Replacing the purge valve might fix it?

Don't throw parts at codes, especially EVAP codes. The system is complex and knowing you have a stuck vent the system is not going to be happy

Who knows if anything I did actually fixed this, but...

- A few warm days
- A bottle of gas line antifreeze
- Stuck an electrical fish tape down the filler neck until it hit something
- Blew compressed air through the filler neck vent tube and filter
- Zip tied the filler neck about an inch higher where it passes through the hanger on the frame. It seemed like there was a slight up hill slope to it.

Tank filled easily a couple of days ago and the codes have not come back...yet.

So now I've probably jinxed it.

As long as your zip tie colour doesn't clash with your car you should be good.
