Re: Volvo 850 Jumping starter with cooling fan out
Or could I just measure resistance between that plug and the green wire on the solenoid terminal?

Just looked at a 1997 today. The starter connection is like the 99 above

My 93 and 96 850's don't have that.
Lee's post that you linked describes what mine looks like. I'll test it top-side connector to starter green wire terminal to confirm. We'll get to the bottom of it!

That is indeed the correct connector.

Yes ! Jim.
Key off.
VOM on ohm mode. Check for O ohms between the strut wire and the green/red connector that attaches to the starter solenoid. You want the wire itself, pulled off the solenoid .

Re: Volvo 850 Jumping starter with cooling fan out
Got it. It's looking like Monday when the vortex lifts before I dive into that.
Just for additional clarity: even with the key in position I or II, there shouldn't be volts in that wire, right? Though presumably with key turned to start (position III) it would read 12 volts. Right?
With this thread cleaned up we should have a clear explanation of whether an 850 has that starter jumper and, if so, what it looks like: 93 does not seem to have one, 94?, 95? not sure; 96 does have it as per picture and Lee's confirmation + my test; and looks like it was further changed in 97 on.
