Upper torque arm head support broken

Post by caltemus »

Hey all, the pictured part broke pretty violently on the highway, causing the whole torque arm to rattle around and the engine to shake in the bay. The two larger (13mm?) bolts holding the arm to the block were also loose. What is it called and where can I get a replacement? Luckily I was able to pull one off of my spare 850 but I'd like to buy a backup. For reference; it's a 1994 850 NA 5-spd, and the one on my 1995 NA auto was the same part.

Thanks,
-Charlie

This seems to be the part you're looking for, #26 in the diagram:

It is part number 9434264, called "Stay." Check out FCP Euro or the dealer. I got the diagram from Volvo Parts Lisle, and they have the part available as well.

I can't see all of the upper torque bush, but it does not look like it is fitted correctly. I would have expected to see less of the bush than this appears to show. I'd have a close look at the bush relative to the spare one you have.

Good observation. It doesn't look like the correct position for a stock bushing. I have a poly bushing, but it fits a bit too sloppy for my taste and I think I'm going to change it back depending on if the vibration goes away after replacing my hydraulic motor mounts. Mine probably has about the same amount of play as in that picture.

When I first got the car, the torque arm bushing was shot. Rather than deal with press fitting a new one, I bought the assembly from FCP (Torque Arm Bracket With Bushing - Pro Parts Sweden 3524345). It has always had some play between the bushing and bracket. It was also below freezing when this photo was taken. I'm actually pulling the whole bracket to the right in the photo to show the broken piece better. I did re-center the bracket on the bushing when i was buttoning everything up. Would there be any problem putting some blue loctite on the large lower bracket bolts, to try and prevent this in the future?

I don't see why you couldn't use Loctite. As long as it isn't a permanent type thread sealer. I've heard horror stories about that being used on the VVT cam bolt and it not being able to be removed.

I had problems with Proparts arm and bushing set, too. It slid around too much and caused so much engine vibration. I couldn't for the life of me understand why an engine with all new mounts all around rattled like my beater, a 99 Altima. I ponied up and just bought the OEM bracket and bushing and it really smoothed out my engine... I

wonder if all that extra vibration from the poor fit of the bushing led to this stress fracture.
