And the original 99 relays are better quality than the Kaehler ones, and program slightly differently (i.e. as per the IPD instructions).

Hi,

Well that could mean that they dont last very long so the owners have to go looking for new ones too.

If i knew how this thing worked i could modify the one i have now and put a simple 'knob' on the dash to adjust the delay, but this relay has 6 terminals not the usual 4 and so i dont know what those other two contacts are for.
A simple SPST relay has 2 terminals for the coil and 2 terminals for the switch, and a simple SPDT relay has 2 terminals for the coil and 3 terminals for the DT switch, but since this has 6 terminals it's unclear what those extra 2 or that extra 1 is doing. If anyone knows how this works that would be great.

Thanks for the replies, and i looked on eBay but they are all 'used' so i dont think i would go that route. I've had bad luck with eBay in the past also with other electrical items and other stuff.

Yes, that is possible, but almost certainly not the case here. Like the vast majority of relays, these will last a very long time. I've never heard of one crapping out. They are missing from the jy cars because they are hugely popular upgrades that work in a variety of vehicles, not just the VWs or Audis that have them from the factory. I wouldn't hesitate to buy used from eBay - get two if you are concerned!

Hi there,

Oh ok, thanks for the info, i'll have to give this some more thought.
Next i will check the relay that is in there now and try to remove it and examine it. I'd like to see what this thing looks like close up. I should get out there tomorrow i guess, just a few other things going on these past few days.

Thanks again and maybe i wont have reserves buying one from them. I hate spending 35 bucks (new) on something that i only have to use once in a while when it is a light rain, which is not that much for me.

Take care,
Al

Hi,

You think you could show me the link to the relay itself? That would help a lot.

I went out to the car this morning and forgot to take a pic of the relay because i had a lot of other things going on today. I was checking the voltage though that we had talked about in another thread with a new meter i got at a Radio Shack that i found still open in Somerset. It looked pretty good although not ideal at 12.22 volts before starting the car then 13.8v after starting. I would prefer a higher voltage after starting though. That 12.22v is after 2 days of sitting in the driveway with the engine off the whole time.
MrAl - you drive so little (info from another thread) you should probably have your car on a trickle charger on weekends to keep your battery up to snuff. 12.2V on a battery is pretty low and it won't live long if you let it stay there.

There's no arrow in that picture, that's the point. It is a picture of a 196 relay.

Here's a 99 relay, with the arrow:
