98 S70 Cranks but won't start

Post by 98VolvoS70 » Sat Feb 04, 2017 2:43 pm

First, I've been through the similar posts for this issue, but seemed to be further along without resolving the issue. I could use all the advise towards next steps. So here's the history on the starting issue:
Vehicle: 1998 Volvo S70 GLT non-turbo, auto, about 200K miles, top end rebuilt by previous owner at approx.170k due to timing belt
Son drove "his" S70 to McDonald's and it was behaving normally. After eating inside, he came out and the S70 would start but ran very rough with no power. He called me instead of trying to drive it. When I arrived, it cranked fine and fired, but very intermittent and died within 5-10 seconds. Next attempt, I used throttle to try to keep it idling...no success. Next attempt, cranks but didn't start. Let it sit overnight and towed home the next morning. By this time, the battery is dead.
So now what I've done: replaced the battery at the recommendation of AutoZone, tested the old battery and said it was bad. I've googled the conditions and watched many videos and read a bunch of forum posts. Here are my discoveries to date:
(1) getting fuel and spark
(2) Fuel Relay checked/jumper used - no effect
(3) Spark plugs pulled - dry, normal deposits, re-set gap
(4) Found some vacuum connectors rotting - replaced
(5) Disconnected Mass Air Flow - no effect
(6) Pulled Cam Sensor - clean, dry, no indication of damage
(7) Pulled plugs, aired out, added oil, reinstalled and turned over for about 60-70 seconds - didn't start

I do not have the tools to test compression or fuel pressure, yet. Debating if there is something else I'm missing before turning it over to the local Volvo Service Shop.

Thanks

Sounds like you need to check compression and timing.
