98 S70 N/A 5-speed, Loud "KER-FLUNK" from the front end...

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hey everyone,

Our car is Stage-0 right now. Only suspension components that need to be replaced are the rear end links and trailing arms (which aren't even Stage-0 things, right). She drives true on the highways. We've gone as fast as 80mh. But my preferred highway speed is more 65mph. (Now you can see why I'm such an N/A guy, right?) Turns are great. The car is everything we've wanted. Alignment has been holding for almost six months. I "float" over all the speed bumps in Queens (that all Gabriel ride life!!) -- no weird creaks, clunks, or noises.

But...

If we slam on the brakes, there's a KER-FLUNK. If I gun it from first-gear, there's a KER-FLUNK, and yesterday, after a 100 mile drive and as I was backing into a parking spot, there was the dreaded KER-FLUNK again. (I had to reverse into the parking spot kinda fast because there was a car eyeing it!)

- All new motor mounts (side is FEBI, front is Cortico, rear is FEBI) all new subframe bushings (VOLVO XC90s).
- Transmission mount is new and it's a VOLVO one.
- No "whining" bearing noises. (If the passenger pushes the dash a little the car is whisper quiet on the highway...)
- Bosch Quietcast rotors and brake pads all around.
- Febi control arms.
- Gabriel Readystruts, no play in springseats.
- Power steering doesn't leak. (Oil leaks, but that's from a crappy crush washer...)
- Passenger side axle is rusty NAPA axle, unknown age.
- Driver's side axle is a cheap PEPBOYS axle, 1.5 yrs old.
- Endlinks are Karyln's  but again, there are no weird clunks over bumps. Will swap out before my late Spring alignment. (2 years from Karyln's is more than you should EVER expect from five dollar parts...)

It really hasn't been getting worse. And we can go months without the noise. But when you have to slam on the brakes, you hear it. And when you gun it, you hear it. Suffice to say, we're not crazy drivers so we don't hear this sound often.

Any idea what this could be? Thanks for reading!

You may have identified it by suspecting the end links. If you can get someone to bounce the car while you feel the joints with your hand you can verify if that is the problem. I have also had them where the end link isn't torqued down and they are noisy. If you don't preload the control arm with a jack while you install the end link it is easy to bind the stud and it will torque to spec but not be tight.

Thanks Lee, I really appreciate your insight. You know, the control arms and sway ends were probably the first things I replaced on our car. I wonder if they've been "mistorqued" all this time... That would make sense to me. But my only question would be, wouldn't this kind of stuff affect alignment and cause noises during other points?

The end links won't. The sway bar only affects stuff on loaded cornering , which can be rare in city driving.

Steve, you think it's my stabilizer bar? Ugh...

That would make sense... Because, like I said, the car rides true. And it's almost whisper quiet in there. Except for the "KERFLUNK-sound" of sudden braking and/or sudden acceleration...

My OEM end links just fell apart in my hands on removal - I can't believe they stayed in place. They are weak on these cars, I think.

OK, I'll swap those out. (I am coming up on two years with these Karylns... I know, I know, I know...)

I really hope that's the "KER-FLUNK." I don't want to touch my subframe ever again!

My Karylns lasted all of 150 miles. Replaced with OEM links and now 2.5k miles no noise from the front.

Well, you do drive a Turbo! :D

I just ordered a pair of Lemforders.$37 shipped. (I think the MeyleHDs were $28 shipped.) I'll try to put them in this weekend and see what happens!

For the guys on here who've read my stuff, yeah, I'm learning...

Just spent some time reading through some MVS archives. It seems like this is textbook control arm bushing stuff noise. :|

I haven't had the time to life the car and inspect my control arms yet. (And certainly won't for a little while with the nor'easter of the century going on around here in NYC.) But I think this is most certainly the case. Especially given the noise upon sudden acceleration and deceleration. I can also recreate the noise (on the descent) if I go over a speed bump at 30 mph. And today, I noticed an odd noise that I can only describe as a "hesitation" that now is consistent when accelerating from a dead stop. We've put on about 1500+ miles in the past month so we've really been pushing our car lately.

Will definitely update this post when I can get to this. And will get those Lemforders in there! We're overdo a Karyln sway end link review, too no?

Hope everyone on the east coast is keeping safe!
