I did new pads on rears on the 1999 last year , or two?
Stopping power is great but the squeal like " Deliverance" even with new rotors
This is great for two reasons
Pedestrians hear you coming
If you practice a bit, you can play " Dixie" coming to a stop, which amuses me

I have had great success eliminating the noise by installing the "anti squeal shims" from Volvo and using a liberal amount of Permatex brake paste on the back of the pads:abscate wrote:I did new pads on rears on the 1999 last year , or two?

Many years ago, in Europe, we used to have bumper stickers that read, IF IT SQUEELS, IT'S A VOLVO! This issue comes up many times and the solution is to fit the shims, or learn to amuse yourself with them as you do!

I've always had copper spray that I'd hit the backs with and then lube the heck out of the slider pins. Not sure if this is any different with a Volvo but it works fine on the MC and previously on the Dodge, VW and Ford.

I think I should have gone heavier with the brake lube. I have Centric brakes from the wonderful (not) Rockauto. "C-tek" rotors and ceramic pads. They don't stop that great and they make a whirring/squealing noise while I drive, but it's intermittent. They're much better than my old original 174k-mile rotors, but they aren't as good as I would like. At least they stop quietly. It could be that I somehow bled the brakes wrong, but I highly doubt that. I got all the air and a lot of nasty old fluid out of there, the master cylinder looks very clean now.
Oh well, I'll live with these until I upgrade to 302s with some Akebonos.

Unknown to most but cars that have ABS can get air stuck in the ABS control module/manifold occasionally and it isn't fun to get out. Usually you require a dealer level scan tool to open up all of the valves to bleed it correctly using a vacuum bleeder. Whatever you do -- don't let the reservoir run dry.

Oh great... that sounds like loads of fun. Yeah, I never let it run dry. That's just a way to introduce more air into the system... rather counterproductive method of bleeding your brakes.wizechatmgr wrote:Unknown to most but cars that have ABS can get air stuck in the ABS control module/manifold occasionally and it isn't fun to get out.
