98 V70 used front/rear used caliper body - good price?

Post by 98v70dad » Sat Mar 25, 2017 8:40 pm

Whats a reasonable price to pay for an already pulled caliper (front or rear) ? I'm going to overhaul mine and have bought all the necessary parts but I don't think I have time to get it done (in a pair) in the time I have available. Today I thought about buying used and overhauling them as I have time. Removing whats on the car and replacing them with the overhauled units wouldn't take that long. It would also allow me time to paint the bodies.

Any ideas about a reasonable price for the "cores" from a place that sells already pulled parts? I'm thinking $25 each but I may be way off. What do you think?

Check Ebay and car-part.com - always my first websites for car parts, after my local Pick'n'Pull closed.

But a rebuilt front P80 caliper is like $30. Not worth rebuilding them oneself, I think.

I did what you suggested (ebay anyhow) before I posted this question yesterday and found only rebuilt units. Agree that I'd rather pay $30 and get a rebuilt unit than have to do it myself. But, I've already got the parts and any time I've bought a low cost rebuild of anything it hasn't lasted very long. I want to rebuild the brakes and never have to do it again (except for pads).

Voluparts on the North side of Atlanta has had every used item I've ever gone in to buy - already pulled and on a shelf in the warehouse. His prices are reasonable (usually). I just wanted some idea of what a fair price would be because I have no idea. I also don't have to pay any shipping when I buy from him. Paying shipping for a rebuilt caliper makes sense, but shipping for a core will be as much as the part cost - doubling the cost.

If I had the cores for all four corners I could work on them in my free time and eliminate the need to rebuild them and remove/reinstall them all in one day.

I bought these last fall, rebuilt and already painted at $32 each https://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?partnum=19P1732. They core return shipping is like $6 they provide you with a label.

Your plan sounds reasonable, but I guess I wouldn't pay more than $20 each for the used substitutes.

Car-Parts.com gave me an idea of what used would sell for. Most of them are $35. I was thinking $25, so I wasn't far off. Probably buying all 4 corners will get me a better price.

Car-parts.com was a good suggestion, thanks jdawg.

Thanks. I've already bought all the little parts required.

Yesterday I replaced a front wheel bearing and it took way longer than I expected - I am slow and sometimes not so smart. I had planned to do both front wheel bearings AND rebuild all of the calipers - crazy optimistic. My wife is up in Chicago so I would have been with transportation for three days. Time for a new plan. The brakes can wait. I figured the wheel bearing would take less time than it did. I wasted an hour trying to remove it without taking off the control arm. You can push the axle back just enough to get a socket with an extension in there. I wasn't brave enough to really torque down on it though and I couldn't get the fasteners loose. After about an hour I realized I would have had the bearing off a half hour earlier if I had just disconnected the control arm.

My front end wobble seems to be 95% reduced now. I don't know if it was the bearing or the wheel I swapped out at that location. I have a full sized spare and I figured since it was off the car I might as well swap it and see. The old bearing made some scraping noises when rotated and held in my hand. I think it was going bad but not real bad yet.

Harbor Freight has a nice roll away on sale right now for $300. Not a bad box for the money. I assembled that instead of replacing the other bearing. The HF impact wrench seems to have already failed after just one use. Their motto for corded tools should be "once and done"

Oof. Glad I didn't buy that one. When I was doing my struts, I splurged on the Ryobi cordless impact wrench, spending probably $150 for the wrench, battery, charger, and a Pittsburgh Pro impact socket set from Harbor Freight. Totally worth it. My life has changed for the better.

I've had a day to think about it and the cardone rebuilts from rock-auto are sounding like a better plan than rebuilding mine as I had planned. I'll get it done faster and have a few more free weekends (at least in theory). Finding and collecting all the little parts was quite an ordeal since I had to order from three different places and then one of them back ordered one thing. Anyhow, I could always sell the complete kit I in the parts section at a discount and someone else can save themselves the trouble of collecting everything.

Have you been happy withe the quality of the cardone rebuilds? I have read good and bad at various places around the net.

I tried to order them through NAPA about 6 months ago but they were quite a bit more expensive there and NAPA made the process way more of a pain than necessary. I finally gave up on getting them there.

So far so good on these calipers. They are rebuilt Volvo units (ATE). I've only had them since the fall, on my R, which doesn't see a lot of road time during the winter. So all I can say is they work well, no sign of rust yet (the car is kept outside). There are a lot of Cardone caliper users on the forum though, maybe you can get more feedback from others too. I'm also the guy who recommends the corded impact from HF, and that hasn't gone so well for some!
