850 hood latch cable

Post by ir637113 » Sat Apr 08, 2017 4:14 pm

Sooo... Was trying to check my oil the other day (been having issues with blowback from a busted dipstick and just replaced it. The cable snapped right at the handle (ripped out of the little piece in the handle). I know replacing the whole cable is a bear of a task. Is there a quick, dirty, easy way to do this? I still have all the pieces (I pulled the pin out so I wouldn't lose it.)

Saw a post about splicing in a bike brake cable, but I'm not quite sure how I can hook it into the latch. Any help appreciated.

Did the cable break? Or did the plastic latch break? Or did both break?

The latch is fine, and the cable is mostly fine. The cable came out of the little metal piece that hooks into the plastic latch. I'll try and attach the picture here again. If it doesn't work, I'll try later from my laptop

You've got three options:

1. Clean, epoxy, and crimp the two ends, and then shrink wrap some tape on it, and pray it holds (I've used Gorilla Epoxy on a similar break on a Mini Cooper bonnet cable and it's held for two years.) You can try some of these http://www.homedepot.com/p/Field-Guardi ... lsrc=aw.ds

2. Cut back some of the cable and attach a new section, getting a piece from a bicycle shop and following the steps mentioned above.

3. Install a new cable.

Good luck, that cable is hella pricey! https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/56959/ ... e-9152456/

You asked for a dirty hack ;) :

Works fine since some time ... it's just dangling under the hood, basically.

theWIFES_S70,

something like that, yes. It's below the turn indicator, in front of the right front wheel.

Actually, there is an easy way, I wrote it below. Get the cable from Volvo dealer only. Don't use aftermarket part.
