Re: A/C dryer to compressor pipe torque?

Post by scot850 » Fri Apr 14, 2017 4:23 pm

I had to remove the whole (suction?) pipe along with the old dryer unit as it was seized on at the top of the dryer.

I have re-installed everything, but was looking to see if their is a torque value for the compressor end of the pipe. It is a 6mm internal hex 'SEMS' screw/bolt. The only value on Vida says to tighten at the compressor end to 25Nm +/- 6Nm. That seems high for a 6mm internal hex bolt, but is tht never-the-less correct?

Seeing as they say to only tighten the dryer to pipe nut to 30Nm (how you manage that as I've said before when you can't get a socket on it? Maybe a 22mm crowfoot and a torque wrench?).

Also it says to fill the suction pipe with new oil. Again poor English, do they mean fill the dryer by the suction pipe with PAG oil or the actual pipe. Only sensible option is the former, but who knows!?

Thanks guys and for those that recognise it, a Happy Easter to all of you and great long weekend to all the rest!

yes, a crows foot on the torque wrench. Keep in mind the added length of the wrench and stay down from the top of the spec range a little.

Just ordered a new suction line for mine, threads were galled and I rolled them when I disassembled them (In a vise with a 1-1/8 end-wrench!)
I had to cut the fitting off the old Accumulator to fit in the vise
A warning to all, make sure the accumulator mount bracket bolt doesn't fall out, if it does, the assembly will droop on the hoses, exposing itself (right in front of the subframe) to parking curbs !

That torque value for the line at the compressor sounds like double a standard M6 bolt! I'm looking all over too. Let you know what I find

Isn't that hex bolt just holding the pipe into the compressor -the O-ring does the sealing? In that case the torque will not be important, just seat the oring , put pressure on the tube, and tighten with your elbow

Those are the first torque specs I've seen with tolerances!

Decided to check the torque for the AWD prop-shaft bolts which are the same. They are 30Nm so 25Nm is fine, so that is what I did.

Thanks for the help though. New dryer is installed and hopefully all is well. I won't find out until the rest of the car is done and have the A/C re-charged.

Now onto the next challenge. Remove and clean the air-box and ETM or tackle the RH C/V outer boot. Choices, choices.....!
