Removed Bevel Gear but now oil leak...

Post by instarx » Sat Apr 22, 2017 1:19 pm

I successfully removed my angle gear, but now there is a big oil leak. It drips pretty aggressively in three spots after I park the car. It is hitting the subframe and spreading out (it is definitely engine oil and not transmission oil). I am hoping I somehow disturbed the turbo oil return line and I just need to fix that. Does that sound right? The oil stops dripping after a few minutes and is dripping slightly to the driver side (but the leak could be anywhere since it is running off the subframe.

You do not want to know how much I dread crawling under the car again, lol. But the good thing is there is now plenty of room to work now that the BG is out. Does it sound like a turbo return leak? Any other things I should check while I am under there? I did move the oil cooler when taking the BG out, but that area is fine and the leak is not there. Thanks in advance.

With the angle gear out, working on the XC is SOOO much easier. You should have very simple access to the turbo return line. I think you're just gonna have to get under there and check it out. When I removed my angle gear though, I don't remember messing with the turbo at all.

Thanks. You're right it's like a cavern in there without the BG. I was banging around with my wrenches getting the BG out, I'm thinking I may have knocked the return line and damaged the gasket. It's the original 17 year old one, so I'll see.

I have some tips and pictures of the removal that I will post. Things were not exactly as others have described and I came up with a really easy way to keep that collar in place that does not use Loctite.

Curious to see how you did it. I used the hose clamp method.

I have no idea how people used the loctite... there's no way it can hold through the vibration and force from the transmission and plus it's the ATF is all wet and does not help any bonding.

That's pretty impressive your turbo return seal is original. Most have failed by now at least once. Mine's on the first change, but not bad considering I'm nearly at 250K. That's a real PITA repair with the angle gear still in there.
