Hi all.
My turbo is leaking a bit of oil. I always fill it up from min to half about every 2500-3000km.
Garage allready told me this once after they changed the transmission mount and a coolanthose under/next to it.
It leaks the oil exactly on those coolant hoses. Wich according to the garage makes them soft and unreliable.
Had two of them swell up and rip allready.
Now the new hoses will probably take quite some time to do that again and the oil leak is not all that bad.
I keep a good eye on it. And I had cars wich used more oil.
But I would like to drive this car for a lot longer, so best I do something about it I think.
What turbo does the B5204T have? A mitsubishi 15g right?
Now I have been reading a bit about the different turbos used.
And a lot of people say to replace it with a 16t instead of the same 15g.
Because it is supposedly better and will fit straight away. Need no remaps or whatsoever. Wont hurt the engine.
I even read you can use the same hot side.
Is this true?
Or is a rebuild a better idea?
Thanks!
Turbo replacement B5204T or rebuild

First, I'd replace those turbo coolant hoses with the do88 silicone hoses. You'll never have them torn again.

It'll be best for you to take a look at your turbo and see what the tag on your compressor housing says, 2.0 T5 was Japan and some European countries only. Most of us in North American countries will not know what you have.
Thanks.

If you have a 15g you can put the 16t internals into it. Lucky at ardideas has alot of hopups for volvos. You will just have to confirm you have a 15g. From there on ardideas should be able to help you out with a hopup. Where did you get that italian market 2.0 turbo btw., thought you were in the benelux area?
Also: are you sure the turbo is shot ajd not just the turbo return oil cooler line seal? They always faul with age, leakimg oil like crazy at the back of the motor.

It came to holland from the italian first owner in 2003. I am the third dutch owner. Second being just a dealer.
There were a lot of these volvos sold here. So, logically fans seeked them out from abroad when they became scarce here. Its quite easy to import cars here.
Dont know any real history about it. Just that it was quite neglected when i bought it. But still very solid.
I will try to check the turbo type. And also try to see where it leaks exactly.

I did some reading on the turbo oil return line.
Most people say the gasket at the turbo leaks. And sometimes the o ring deteriorates.
It seems quite easy to change if not an awd.
then I saw I read it wrong and you wrote; turbo return oil cooler line seal.
But I think you mean the same right?

When the turbo itself has an internal oil seal leak the result is typically smoke, and a lot of it. The hot side is the typical failure point and it dumps oil into the exhaust. If it is an oil leak that drips around the turbo it is usually the return line gasket or, in rare cases, the copper washers on the banjo bolts on the oil supply line. Both of those are easy to fix.

Good to hear!
The car never ever fumes from the tailpipe, so then lets hope only swapping the gasket and o ring will solve it.
I found the needed gasket and o ring. Original volvo parts. 5 euro or so.
Will order them together with the evaporator parts somewhere this week.
Found a nice robert movie and pictures on how to do it. Looks easy enough.
I only looked at it from the top. Its all very oily there. I'll clean it, so I can see what it exactly does.
Also saw the red line vacuum is very very old and shabby...
Also remembered I replaced the other two with benzine line some time ago with the idea to buy some good vacuum line..
That of course never happened, so I will add that to the list too.
What size mm line is this?

checked and cleaned a bit.
Most was old stuff. Not fresh sticky new oil.
Only around the black plastic sensor thing? I dont know what it is.
There is seems a bit fresher.
middle on this picture: here you can see the whole picture.
Its mostly old oil and attached crap. i cleaned the vertical bit a bit on the snail so you can see the difference.
Would you still think this is a return line leak? since that is more on the other side, no?

Just been under the car and could clearly see the return line doesnt leak. it was nicely dry around the gasket and connection at the engine.
Oil filter had a bit of a drip and the oil plug ring could need a change.
But rest of the engine was nicely dry
Fresh oil is hanging from where the big air hose to the maf connects to the turbo. Any thoughts of what it could be?
Also in combination with the top of the turbo being oily?
