Exhaust...clogged muffler

Post by loveMy850 » Thu Jun 22, 2017 2:48 pm

My catalytic converter went out had it replaced with a universal, anyways I hadnt driven 20 minutes, and it got super loud, I gunned her a little, seemed lack of power also, I heard some rattle, the loud went away, thinking maybe some char from the converter was clogged in the muffler, the loud went away but not for very long, its louder than ever ,driving me insane!! How can I know if my muffler is clogged or what the hell it is, Im getting aggravated having to put up with this growling. HELP!!!

Make sure that the pipe or any other exhaust system part isn't even close to any part of the floor or the rear suspension. Just crawling under and looking won't really tell you everything since it moves quite a bit, you can try to move it by hand, with a fair amount of pressure in all directions, to see if the pipe or muffler might be hitting something.

Although not impossible it is not typical for chunks of the converter to travel beyond the converter. They usually have a screen at the output to contain things.

Oh no really so actually it wasnt converter char chunks that came out Ozark Lee? I will look, the growling sound is so close to the floor its traveled from the back of the car to the front. This is suppose to be a new universal converter, Ive talked to the guy, he says he done nothing wrong, besides looking under and moving things a bit, what else do you suggest, could this be the converter, his weld, or the muffler, Thanks

Are you positive there are no exhaust leaks? If I had just had the CAT replaced and the exhaust was loud and vibrating under my feet, then I would be very suspicious that the welds were bad. Check the entire exhaust system slowly, engine running, don't touch anything. Soapy water in a spray bottle will help, look for bubbles.

Ok thanks, I will do that, I looked at the welds, but I'm thinking the same thing...
