opinion on second gen v70r

Post by fairmont50 » Mon Jul 10, 2017 9:15 pm

Not sure if this belongs here, but I would like some opinions on the reliability of the second gen v70 (R in particular) versus the first gen cars (1998 - 2000). I have a 1999 r that the trans failed on today (big bang in reverse and now no reverse, seems to go into gear but nothing) and I am looking for a replacement. Decided that I do not want to replace a trans on a car with 320 thousand miles and I am looking for alternatives.

Thanks

Chris

Get a 2.5T engine around 2004-2007 or so with around 100K miles or so.
Check to be sure it is Aisin-Warner trans, it is a good one.

tryingbe,
That is one of the things I was worried about, do you know if those required or can you replace them with the standard struts?

Thanks,

Chris

cn90,
I know that the aisin trans is good (the current one in the car has ~280K on it) but as always, I was hoping it would last longer. That day always comes sooner than we think. At least it failed at home, the car has only left me stranded twice in the 12 years and ~200K that I drove it.

I think you are greedy LOL.
You got 320K miles out of that trans and are still not happy?

Try some American trans, they fail at 30K, no joke.

Any trans that can give me 200K of service, I am happy.
More than 200K, it is a bonus for me.

I replaced the engine at 290k and knew that the trans was next but as always I expected it to last another day.

Personally I'd run a mile from a P2 V70R or S60R. Too complex and expensive to maintain. When they go wrong (and it will) the electrical issues can ruin you and drive you mad. Even dealers shudder when they come in for repair.

My 2000 P80 V70R also drives me crazy and has cost me a lot of hair and money, but most things can usually be fixed (with the exception of the groaning front suspension).

I think the 98R is the easiest to maintain if you can still find a good one. Even better if it is converted to manual trans!

I have considered a P2 R sveral times but each time can't pull the trigger as I have heard way too many horror stories. Mind you I could have bought a really good one for all the money I have spent on the 2000 'R'!!
