2000 V70XC fuel filler door

Post by DrJammer »

Ok, so I'm in a pickle. Fuel filler door on 2000 XC won't release. I have taken the cargo trim off to look for the wire loop for manual override and it's not there. I suspect the mechanic (non-Volvo) destroyed or ditched it possibly when I had to get the tank dropped to replace the fuel pump.

The driver side window controls all work, albeit a few sticks on the driver lock here and there, but that happens with fob too. The rear passenger window control stopped working as well. I tried swapping the right rear window control (which wasn't working for window up) and the fuel door still won't open. Every time I pull the release button, I hear a prominent click under/around the steering wheel.

If I buy a new left, rear window control, it might fix the problem? I have read numerous threads and watched videos, even went to those other pesky volvo forums (gasp). I am close to just prying the door open, but really don't want to. Is there any other manual way to do it?

Any last ditch effort advice is greatly appreciated. Of course it's Saturday night and ordering 2 new rear window controls will put me out until at least Tuesday with no guarantee of a remedy.

Reach your had further forward, you will see the small electrical motor.
Pull the rod toward the rear of the car, this will release the fuel door.

They dropped the long pull release when they went to the S/V70's from the 850's.

Thank you so much. It was definitely nice to see replies from those 3 names.....I really had to squeeze my hand in there, feel bad for folks with bigger hands than me.

So I can get gas, will a $11 rear window control possibly fix this? I need to order some coolant anyways, so I may just order 2 Pro Parts window controls

Not sure what you are wanting to replace. I have found it is the actuator/motor at the fuel flap that typically fails not the other end.

You can remove it and try to apply voltage to it and see if it works. It should just pull back and release.

So the motor/actuator is buried way more forward on the 2000 than it appears on the video.

Is removal replacement the 2 screws visible at the fuel cap and then 1 on the body in the cargo area?

P/N 9152856 which looks like ebay or junkyard are my options at this point.

Hey! I just had this happen to me a few months back. I just pried it open and (intentionally) broke the plastic clip. Like another user said, the actual motor has probably failed. When you get it open, have someone activate it while you stand and look at the release to see if there's movement. Mine failed completely and I ordered a new one off eBay. A little pricey... but I plan on keeping my car around for a while and there weren't a lot of other options for me.

Hi,

I had the problem too a couple weeks ago so i started looking into this too. Mine was a v70 1998.

What else i thought of was an idea i got from Robert's very nice video. That is, just remove the 'hook' thing that goes into the body of the car when the door is shut and latches. Once that is removed, the door will open manually without any trouble, and then just use a locking gas cap. For me i have a locking gas cap anyway.

For now though i'll check into the home made wire trick from the other thread about this problem too, which just means using a heavy gauge wire to pull back on and it can be hidden just like in the 650's.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.

So as usual, thanks for all the feedback. I finally got around to removing the fuel filler flap motor after getting back from vacation.

Simple voltage tests show signs of life from the wiring. I also happened to have a pair of fuel filler flap motors from an '04 V70 P/N 9483311. I hooked them up and pulling the flap release on the door moved the pin. But it's a different set up, where the '04 has the delay that eventually closes it. The '00 XC has the spring tension that it releases and goes back on it's own.

Am I able to remove the motor from 9483311 and put it into 9152856? Do I risk frying anything?

Update: I put in the motor from a different fuel filler door actuator and it seems to be working fine. I guess for folks trying to get their hands on P/N 9152856, if you are at a the junkyard or come across other Volvo model fuel filler door motors, swap the motors and you should be good to go.
