Weird Electrical issues 850R Manual content

Post by V850R » Tue Sep 26, 2017 5:28 am

Hi all!

Long time browser, second time 850R manual owner, first time poster...

I had a black on black manual 850R many years ago, brilliant car
Legitimately one of the best cars I've ever owned...

Recently, i bought another 850R manual, cheaply, trying to relive the glory of my old one, and i wanted a fun run-around that i could do pretty much everything in...

Long story short, this one, is a nightmare...
Not a terrible car, but definitely not a good one...

The interior is pretty much all trashed putting it nicely, the dash has been ripped out instead of being removed properly in the past and is now just flopping around in the car, the head-gasket is starting to go, it's pressurizing the cooling system, she's done 270k kms, service history is non-existent, and most things are on the tired side of things...but genuine R, genuine Manual and all the suspension was recently refreshed with Bilsteins and IPD springs among other niceties...

This, is not why i'm here asking questions though...
I have an electrical issue that is doing my head in and i don't know where to start!

Soooo, unless all the doors are locked when the car is running, the windows won't work because they lose all power and the OBD port loses all power and the ECC loses all power; the passenger door until recently was working fine, now doesn't lock off the central 9/10 times or unlock 9/10 and occasionally when the door was open the aforementioned power issues stopped; if the car is off, and all the doors are locked the windows work, if the doors are unlocked, the window switch pack etc illuminates, but if you go to cycle a window from any switch front or rear the switch pack and ecc loses power, and the heated seat switches light up and the cigarette lighter regains power, they're otherwise un-powered.
Oh and when turning the car right off, the central locking acts like it's cycling, but doesn't actually...
No wiring has been cut, spliced, or muddled with in anyway.
Any wiring i've come across that's been played with, has been repaired correctly, and to OEM plugs etc

Because the fault doesn't seem to be located in one thing, or with one wiring loom...i don't really know where to start?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Many Thanks, and kind regards, Jason.

You don't say what year the car is and it may not matter, but electrical circuits increase in complexity in later years as boards replace wiring. It sounds like a ground has been lost somewhere. I've seen a bad ground in one circuit affect others as the current seeks an alternate path to ground.

Wild guess but check this.....on the aft part of the door there is a metal piece that the window slides up and down on. This slide piece is attached at the bottom of the door. If this piece is loose or not secure it will make contact on the door lock actuator causing wacky electrical stuff to happen. You have to remove the drivers door card to inspect this window slider. You have to start some where.

You can tell if the mounting tab at the bottom has broken off by slamming the door shut. If you get a clunk near the back lower of the door the lower part of the slider has broken off the mounting bracket. This can be confirmed by removing the torx screw about 2/3rd the way down the rear edge of the door, and if you hear a noise when the screw comes out that is the bracket hitting the bottom of the door confirming it is broken.

On an 850 the part may be listed as obsolete, but the 98-00 V/S 70 is the same but uses a pop-rivet at the back of the door in place of the screw.

How about some new info
New ignition switch
No dice
Unplug my left window motor (passenger side), leave the door open and open drivers door, everything works roughly as it should, apart from Windows seeming to use a lot more amps than they should
Drivers door closed passenger door open everything dead
Passenger door closed, drivers closed everything dead
Unplug passenger door completely, everything dead.

If only in the first accessories clock
The power works on the switch pack and lighter etc until you go to use a window switch, then it dies and the ecc and lighter illumination turn on...

Next ill pull out the centre console and inspect for bad earth

You will have to have the dash out and inspect the wiring harness for cuts and shorts, cm by cm.

When you get problems like this you can't diagnose by symptom. The door position is indicative of a wiring problem in that area so focus on that, slit open the looms with a razor and look for shiny exposed wires

It's a mess sorting a car like this, but they are not shortcuts.

Sounds like a short somewhere on the passenger door wire harness some place before the connector. When you open the door it pulls the harness just enough to relive the short. When you close the door the harness relaxes and the short returns. Same thing when you unplug passenger door, unplugging relaxes the harness completely.
