PSA - 1999 V70 XC AWD & TWO new tires

Post by wizechatmgr » Sun Dec 31, 2017 8:10 pm

If you choose not to or are unable to replace all four tires as recommended - let's say because the front wheels were way out of alignment and you didn't rotate them for an extended period of time but the rear tires were otherwise in great condition with almost no tread wear...

Make sure the NEW tires (with the most tread) go on the FRONT axle. If you put them on the rear you'll either hear the viscous coupling whine or you'll blow it entirely. DO NOT place the new tires on the REAR AXLE. I do realize that all other sources say the newest tires always go on the rear but this isn't correct for our AWD cars.

If you use chains (special VOLVO chains) on this vehicle - they are ONLY to be installed on the FRONT wheels.

As rspi mentions, the older AWD is sensitive to uneven tire diameter from wear, I'd try not to drive it too much until Tue ;)

For winter driving, I once drove with a good set of winter tires on the front (FWD) wheels while the rear wheels had all season tires. Ask me how I spun among those cars on the highway (the answer being once the rear of the car went off I don't remember anything)

Got new tires on Tuesday morning. It's quiet as can be.

Definitely suggest getting all 4, if you don't, you'll be sorry.

Good advice to all AWD P80 models. I remember when the P80 AWD models first came out when I was still in Europe. Biggest issue was Volvo was not up-front on the tire warning to owners of what was then new AWD Volvo cars. They very quickly got the bad rap of burning out the AWD system. For the most part dealers were not strong enough getting the message out.

There is a small tolerance in differences the cars can cope with in tire wear but it is fairly small.

Running a car with same tires of equal wear all around also makes a lot of sense especially when bad weather is involved. Definitely running a car with winters at one end and summer/3 season on the other is also a bad idea. It is illegal where I live in Canada to do this but you still see the idiots that do it.

Glad all is well for now and enjoy the peace!

Neil.
