New to the sites, and trying to keep the 200k 2000 v70 on the road and some money in my pocket. I've found much helpful stuff just lurking, but I think I need a little more, partly my own fault.
Recently had an insanely rough idle (like "uh,oh, i think this might be the end" rough). After looking around this site for suggestions, I found that one of the vacuum lines from the front of the engine to the multi-way connector that I've seen called the "vacuum tree" (near the driver's side of the radiator fan) had completely sheared off at the engine side. Cut and Re-connected (will replace soon, as it feels like its disintegrating anyway) and it got significantly better. (Like "Hey Dad, I think you saved the car" better) So far so good. Still a tiny bit clunky at idle, and I'm a little obsessed at this point, so.....
...Right next to the hose I reconnected engine frontside, there is a much skinnier white one (more of a tube) that connects to one of the two "nipples" on the back of the air filter box. There's another nipple on the back of the box with nothing attached to it, but from what I've read here, that one goes to that "vacuum tree" and, wouldn't you know, the "tree" has an open connection. And when I put a finger over the filter box connection, I can feel a little pull.
Assuming that the open/"extra" air filter box nipple connects to that vacuum tree, Does it matter which of the two air filter box nipples (its one on top of the other) goes to the engine front and vacuum tree, respectively. I ask because I somewhat cavalierly removed the existing white tube to check for leaks without even noticing which nipple I removed it from. D'oh.

Picture would be nice. I don't think the 2000 model has a vacuum tree.

There should be a black plastic pipe that tuns from the open nipple on the side of the airbox and runs around to the bottom half just below the cold air intake. This operates the vacuum to the air thermostat on a Non-turbo. The air thermostats are know to fail in the closed position which means your car engine gets hot air only from the metal pipe from the exhaust manifold. If you pull the cold air intake pipe off into the airbox you can see the thermostat. See this thread:

The other pipe I think is part of the emissions system and is a vacuum valve. There should be a pipe attached although I'd have to check where from. Hard to tell from the photo but standing infront of the car is that unit sitting on the battery end of the radiator?
Check lower down as you may find a hard black pipe broken off. They use a rubber hose to connect and they rot and fall off.
Neil.

The nipple doesn’t matter on the air box. Inside the air box is the thermostat that allows vacuum to pass to the cold air valve to regulate intake air temperature. It doesn’t matter which way the vacuum passes through the switch
Consider replacing all those vacuum hoses , they look crusty

Awesome. Found the now-tubeless elbow piece near the intake. That'll be easy. The one that connects to the junction in the fan/battery area not so much, since I don't even know where the other end would be.
A whole lotta crust to be sure. But I'm a little hesitant to try to replace a hose if I can't clearly see where both ends go. The curse of limitless limitations.

Here are the pictures you are needing:
Valve should be attached to the radiator housing just below the intake cold air tube.
Above you can see the other end of the valve with 2 hoses coming out of it. 1 goes to the intake and the other (your missing one) runs down the LHD of the radiator, along undee the radiator and attached to the sub-frame front, and then along the RHS of the inner sub-frame, and then all the wat to the back of the car and to the carbon filter.
Hope this helps,
Neil.
