Clunk when braking after reversing

Post by Rocambolesque »

My 2000 S70 has this problem: I hear a loud clunk (sometimes it's only one, sometimes it's 2-3 clunks all at the same time) the first time I brake after changing from reverse/drive. Example: I park my car nose first at my house. I back out of my parking spot. When I brake, I hear the clunk because it's the first time I brake on reverse. Then I put it in drive, brake at the bottom of my driveway, I also hear the clunk because it's the first brake application after changing from reverse to forward... If I brake again going forwards, I won't hear it again...
Basically it's like if the braking force while going forward moves someting and the braking force going backwards moves it the other way. The acceleration force it never enough to move this. I checked the wheels for play, everything seems tight. Rear shocks and mounts are new. Any ideas?

I had something similar in my '00 V70 after replacing rotors, pads and brake shoes. One brake shoe had escaped from its retaining clip and was in a weird angle against the inside of the rotor/drum. The clunks would come and go, sometimes pulling up on the parking brake lever while moving would cause a loud clunk and sort of reset it.

The fix involved removing the rotor and putting the brake shoes back into position. It was tough to get the rotor off, but with some prying, it finally came off to reveal the problem. Good luck!

Please check the lower control arm bushings where mounted at the sub frame at the front of the car. I had a similar noise and one arm had totally shot bushings. New control arms solved the problem and of course the car handled better too!

I'll definetly check the control arms, the car has vague handling too...

Yes, this makes sense as the noise seems to come mostly from the rear. How do you verify that those are bad? Like all cars older than 5 years here, everything is rusty... I tried moving the wheels by hand, I thought maybe the whole delta link would move, but it doesn't really work. Also, what is the best place to buy the special tool? I don't have a 3500 Suburban to hook a come-along to :)

I'm with Brunoceros; Do you use your "Parking Brake", does it work properly?
