I definitely recall seeing an 850 with a Volvo D5 engine somewhere at a car show in Ontario. Wonder what that swap entails.
That would be real Swedish diesel beast.

I have been looking and looking for more info on what that kind of a swap would entail. D5 into a gasoline P2 or 850, or maybe even easier, the Audi/VW TDI into a gasoline 850. Stupid EPA. Anyone have any idea where I can find more info on either of these? Can't be that hard right? Just have to acquire the engine, harness, and ECU from one overseas....

No...wiring under the dash is completely different.
Instrument cluster, gearbox, ecu, drive shafts....and the list goes on...totaly different car.
It is almost impossible enough to convert gasoline n/a to turbo....don't even think about diesel conversion.

It probably wasn't a swap, but either shipped across from Europe or built at Halifax as a test vehicle. At some point Volvo either considered bringing diesels to North America or somebody willing to spend the extra money really wanted one and took it upon themselves to buy one in Europe, pay import tax and get it certified to register and drive in Canada. At the time if Euro safety and emission standards matched/exceeded Canadian requirements it may have been feasable to do so. But expensive.
That would be harder if not impossible to do now. But in 1990-something into Canada ...maybe...

Man, that's really too bad. I have been doing a bunch of research about what it would take to get a newer Diesel Volvo here in the US. Seems pretty much impossible unless it is 25 years old or older. I'm sure you could import and entire car. But if it didn't get seized by customs, I'm sure I'd end up getting pulled over for some reason, they would somehow realize the car wasn't stock, and have to pay some massive EPA fine. Good times. Hopefully there is some black 5 spd TDI 850 with my name on it for sale for cheap in Left hand drive in 3 years.
