99 V70 XC hose blew off?

Post by Avasquez65 » Fri Apr 13, 2018 11:46 am

While I was merging onto the freeway, my car just lost all power and I honestly thought it was a blown tire, but I opened the hood and I found out one of the hoses blew off or came loose while I was driving. I wasn’t even able to get 10 mph and while idling the car was shaking. The good thing is that my cousin was able to get the hose clamp back on.
Has this happened to anyone before? If so, should I go on about switching the hose?

No, but it is entirely possible as the rubber contracts with age and the turbos tend to 'sweat oil' which collects at the join between the top of the turbo and the rubber hose. It may be worthwhile going around all the turbo/intercooler rubber hose connectors and just nipping up the hose clamps.

That's the charged air pipe from the turbo. Your engine will have a hell of a time sucking air with that off. I have heard of people blowing off turbo/intercooler pipes during hard acceleration. As already mentioned, go around and snug all the hose clamps.

Yep, I've had that happen. Same thing as you, accelerating onto a highway... and bam, surprise! Your rubber connector there is undoubtedly original, so if it were me, I'd go ahead and replace it with a new OEM part and not worry about it again. Make sure it's fully seated before tightening hose clamps. It works best if you detach the other side of the metal charge air pipe to allow some ability to twist and wiggle the hose on.

Is the charged air pipe easy to replace? And can someone link me to the part just to be sure 100% positive I am getting the right part.

The charge air pipe is the metal part of that and it should never fail unless damaged. The rubber hose there is actually called the "intercooler hose inlet" I guess, and damn is it pricey!

Below is an aftermarket one that has a couple good reviewsthat is a fraction of the cost. I tend to be weary of aftermarket hoses though. In this case, a failure at a bad time could cause you to lose power like you did when you need it most. Up to you to do the cost-benefit analysis on that. If you plan to keep the car 5+ years, I'd go with the one you know has lasted this long.

Hope this helps.

So is the only part I need to replace is the intercooler hose inlet? I don't plan on having the car that long maybe a year or so, but it keeps breaking down on me then i am just going to sell it.

also, sorry for the other reply, after you replaced the hose inlet, did your volvo work fine?

In that case, grab a generic one. Believe they're only $30 or so.

It’s not the pipe ( the small sleeve) you need to replace it’s the clamps. That’s clamp you have one
Is ok, but the original one had no serrations To cut the pipe and a harder steel than the hardware store ones. You won’t have the rust problem in ABQ that we have here, but you want the best clamp force on this pipe.

You want to place the clamp very carefully when you put this back tog' so you can torque the fasteners -it’s tight in there.

The good news is the hard pipe is bolted into the car and provides down force to help keep the sleeve in place

I’m running my original sleeve at 200k miles.
