Glove still blows up after PCV repair.

Post by jeffsws »

Hello.

Finished a PCV repair on my 850 2.0 turbo. But the glove still blows up. Not as bad as it was before the repair... before it was like a balloon. Here is a video showing it. https://1drv.ms/a/s!AkNcPQgBxT-pjhYGNob_HmcPnNEh Notice that when I push the gas it blows up further then gets sucked in once I release the pedal. Then blows up again shortly after.

The more I work on these cars, the more it kills me... I really need a win heh

Any ideas?

EDIT: Should add that I replaced all parts with volvo original. Kept the box but cleaned it up. Also cleaned up the ptc valve and pretty much everything else that was removed.

All parts and hoses new? Did you blew some air into the lower engine block see if it was clear ?

Friendly note, when a car needs too much attention, it's sometime wise to look for a replacement, sometimes these can start needing too many repairs and time..

I actually just edited above adding that everything is new. I actually didn't blow air into it. I did clean the two ports though.

People have had the glove blow up when they accidentally switched the two hoses on top of the oil trap box. Do you know if for sure those are correct?

Yes, they are correct.

Maybe a compression test is in order?

When you say the pies are fitted correctly, does that mean you checked and replaced them on the same connectors on the oil trap as you found it, or, that they are fitted as per a manual. If you just replaced them as they were on the car when you went in for the repair, it could be they were fitted wrongly previously.

Did you clean the ports? You also need to take the PTC off an make sure it's clear, both through the top and the port on the side for the smaller hose from the intake manifold.

Here's how the hoses go - the broken hard plastic line is to PTC/intake. The empty port is to the top of the engine through the gaps in the intake manifold:

That is how I fixed it. I cleaned the ports but maybe not deep enough? I didn't use a ziptie (as robert diy recommends), nor did i blow air into them.

Assuming for now that the pcv repair is fine. What else would cause it? Worn piston rings? And a compression test may help show that?

Yes on the piston rings and compression test, although that is very uncommon. Definitely wouldn't hurt to try, it's a good measure of engine health to be aware of.

Yours is an NA, are you sure the PCV pipe fitting is sealing well at the flame trap housing?

I did see a post recently where someone cut open an old oil trap box, and the baffles inside were all chipped away and not working, leading to an inflated glove. May have been in the P2 forum. I wonder if that could be going on with yours.

Mine is actually a turbo. I have done this before on an NA and it worked out great. The glove got sucked in so much I thought I might lose it heh.

Yeah I saw that post as well about the box. Suppose I could try that.

So outside of rings and the pvc itself there is nothing else that would cause this?
