misha - do you think that wiring would work across a Jetronic to Montronic swap? That would be a heck of a stretch IMHE>

Yes....the sensors have the same connectors, but most of them have different values.Besides that....ecu pinout is different.
That said...the car would start & run,but not properly....run rich or lean,miss,sputter...etc.
One example is titanium vs. zirconium o2 sensor.Same plug, same length but different part# and totally different values and output.
Maf too....same connector...but connector only.
Other than that...there is variable intake on n/a models up to '95.

Unfortunately none of the ads include photos of the inside of the ECU box :x

The VIN decoder hosted by Volvo that I have always relied on says these all have Motronic 4.3, is there a VIN decoder that says otherwise? Rick, what were you using when you posted over in Shihab's thread?

I find this discussion interesting as it does constantly remind me of all the Volvos I have owned in over 40+ years of ownership. In the early days I always had to remove the part and take it in to hopefully ensure I got the right part. Volvo have been renowned over the years for 'using up' parts and pulling forward releases of parts are parts ran out in production or were overstocked. Just looking at Vida you will see many instances of changes of part numbers listed to chassis or engine numbers but these are not always accurate.

The other issue we all suffer from is market specific vehicles. For example there was a tax break in Italy for 2.0 liter and smaller engines so many Volvos including the 'R' could be bought (as I understand it) as a 2.0 not a 2.3 engine. Ignition keys in Europe being chipped from 96 but not until 98 in NA. Emissions for NA being unique on P80 V/S/C 70's.

So we all need to ready to accept that sometimes data or info we see may not be 100% correct. Then there are the Frankenstein cars where ingenious (?) owners have made bits fit, that may only confuse and may not be 100% compatible.
i had a 68 123GT that had single circuit brake pipes which should have been dual circuit. Cars with removed servos as parts were no longer available, a 70 145 wagon that would over heat even after 2 new heat gaskets, radiator flushes, water pump and more. Eventually a wise person identified it had a 145E (injection) cylinder head which gave higher compression and was the cause of overheating.

Clearly in this case we need the Vin# to identify what the car 'should have' been fitted with and then engine number ideally (assuming the timing belt cover was not swapped over from the original or another engine) and we can go from there.

Thanks for all the inputs guys and it makes good reading.

Neil.

Wow, you guys really really want to get to the bottom of this... If there's any tapping around you want me to do on my Volvo just let me know.

Also, could someone please explain to me what Heinz 57 is exactly...?

Also also, what's all this about rear heated third seat? I haven't even been able to find third row seats for my wagon due to it's (not as common as beige) charcoal interior. (even though it's not necessary, I really REALLY want them).

Besides a steak sauce, it is a term used to indicate a car with bits and pieces of other cars or models to make one complete car. Such as a mix and match sort of thing.

The 99 70 series cars are referred to as the bastard cars because Volvo was putting leftover parts in some instances I believe. So if you have a 99 S/V/C 70 you could have multiple possibilities for the same part depending on what Volvo used at that moment. It is sort of a Heinz 57 year for the 70. June

It was a range of products (Heinz 57 varieties).

3rd row seat heating is a long standing (sitting?) in joke on MVS. It has never existed (or did it, like a Yeti or Big Foot?).

Heinz 57 is a shortened form of a historical advertising slogan "57 Varieties of Pickles" by the H. J. Heinz Company located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Decades of the short version on the bottles brought forth the question what is the 57? Some people thought the 57 meant 57 ingredients but, what are they ... hence questionable origins.

The term Heinz 57 has come to mean something of questionable origins. Synonym for non-biological things is hodgepodge ... a confused mixture, cannot be sure what it composed of.

In this context it analogous to "the man in the closet".
