#6 Fuse Keeps Blowing car won't start 98 a70 Help

Post by Kprixie » Sat Jul 28, 2018 2:33 am

HI I recently had to take my 98 s70 in because the radiator was leaking and over heating I got the car back not even a week later I'm at the store and I go to start. My car and go home and the car won't start won't make any noise do anything at all. The lights and radio work fine so no battery issue and I tapped the starter thinking maybe that was the issue nope, I noticed my door auto lock button wasn't working I looked at the fuses under the hood and the #6 (25) fuse was light up indicated it was blown. Its the central locking; driving mode selector. I replaced it and as soon as I placed the fuse in the slot pop it blows again evey time I try to put a new one. The car won't start I'm sure its because of the fuse I just spent over a grand on the radiator and can't afford to have anymore done I'm wondering I'd there is hopefully a DIY method to getting my car running again. I really need some help its my only car and I have a two month old who's check up is coming up pretty soon and I need to be mobile. I would appreciate any insight into the issue. Thank you

Hope your little one didn’t wake you up at 0300!

You’re symptoms exactly match what happened to my wagon two years ago , where a short in the locking wires took out fuse 6 which stopped starting.

My problem was the wiring loom in the tailgate left hinge, but I don’t think the S70 has this problem , so I think you need to look elsewhere for the break. Give someone a chance to post the wiring diagram for that circuit so we can try sort this out.

You can do this, just the fact that you have gathered all that info and been analytical aboit it points to a solid troubleshooting ability

Well done. The sedans have as bad a reputation for the wiring harness in the LH trunk hinge area for breaking. Every P80 sedan I have worked on has had a at least one and up to 4 broken wires in there.

Note that fuse 6 feeds 3 other fuses for central locking. Disconnect all 3 of them and see if fuse 6 blows again. If so, central locking is not likely the issue. Need to see what else is fed by fuse 6.

By the way, if you have an ohm meter, you don’t need to keep blowing fuses while testing. Just connect ohm meter between output side of fuse and ground. Keep disconnecting things until ohms go up significantly.

That hinge wire will keep breaking in new spots unless you really go to town with a solid electrical fix.

Pull fuses 11C/6, 11C/9, 11C/10 one at a time until #6 stops blowing. That will isolate the problem to one of the three branches.

11C/6 control module central locking/anti-theft alarm, Alarm siren, Movement detector (S70N70)
11C/9 Heated rear seat (S70/V70), Amplifier (C70)
11C/10 Ignition switch.
