OEM Exhaust rusted after four years. Recommendations?

Post by FireFox31 » Tue Aug 07, 2018 6:23 pm

My OEM exhaust rusted out after only four years. Am I the only one surprised by this lack of quality? Which replacement stainless steel exhausts do you recommend?

In May 2014, I bought a new exhaust system from my local dealership. By Aug 2017, the rear muffler was ejecting its fibers because its inner cage had rusted. In Sept 2017, the rear muffler rusted at the tailpipe. Now in Aug 2018, the front muffler has rusted through at its front pipe weld.

The body of the muffler seems solid so I hate to discard it, but the welds and seams along the pipes are just rotting away. I feel like my original muffler lasted much longer. My local muffler shop said I should have painted them with high temp paint immediately before installing the new muffler.

Which stainless steel exhaust systems do you recommend? I'm considering either the Vida Performance one (which I can pick up locally), or the stainless one which my local muffler shop will assemble; both for about $500. Vida has a 3 year warranty while my local shop offers a 5 year warranty.

If going the stainless route, only use T304 stainless. The T409 is no better than mild steel.

Is it possible that my exhaust is rotting prematurely due to unburnt fuel passing into the exhaust? Or could it be because my 18 year old catalytic converter is not functioning properly?

Thanks, for the tip about the steel, Neil. At Vida, the Ferrita Performance exhaust for $800 is entirely T304. The house brand Vida exhaust for $550 has T409 parts with a T304 tailpipe. Both of their descriptions are suspiciously copy/paste similar, but that text change is explicit.

Can you get exhaust stuff from FCP? If there lifetime warranty applies, that might be the trick.

The replacement exhausts sold as OE are sh*t for newer models as well. they've got nothing in common with what was fitted at the factory. A good used will be a much better buy. Or something else entirely. The local shops with warranty sounds like a decent option.

Unburnt fuel shouldnt matter much but with a lot of Short trips water will gather but not have time to boil out. that shouldnt make it rust in those places though.

If I understand what I am reading, the mufflers at my Volvo dealer sold as genuine Volvo replacement are not the same in quality as the one installed at the factory? Luckily the exhaust system on my car still looked new the last time I saw it. Perhaps road salt is causing his system to rot out? June

Correct. The replacements are different. They're shipped in parts while the originals are one piece for example. And they don't last as long.

I've never had to replace an exhaust so far on my 200'+ mile 15+ year old cars. They've been in good shape on both the two P80s and the two P2s.. And here we have salt from both the sea and a ton extra on the roads for four months of winter a year. But I think high mileage actually saves the exhaust. it's when the car is parked that it rusts. When driving it's all warm and dry.

This is stunning. On my S60, the original one is good for many, many years. I'm in canada (think rust&salt) and after about 12 years the flexible started to leak, the first flange as well, and the tail pape give up because of that bracket it had. But otherwise everything is in great shape, even the muffler is perfect except for it's double shield. The only really weak point were the two rear brackets.

And as above, walk the junk yards or Ebay and get a used genuine one from Florida, it will last for another 10 years

You can also buy a used quality brand (check forums to see which brands are known to be good without being too expensive) even from another car model, and have it fitted by a local muffler shop.

"sold as genuine Volvo replacement"

Anything can be a replacement for a genuine Volvo part.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer. These parts are made by the same company, the same way, with the same material as the automotive manufacturer specifies.

OE = Original Equipment Aftermarket parts produced to serve the same purpose as OEM parts but will be different in look and could be made with different materials. Quality can vary from better then OEM to worthless crap.

I believe it is:

OE - Original equipment as originally fitted by the manufacturer to their original design quality specs at time of manufacture.

OEM- May be the original equipment manufacturer but they may look like the original but may not be the same quality, in fact they may not even be the same identical part, just they have been made by the original OE supplier.

I am a conspiracy theorist, and believe Volvo in many cases supplies OEM parts now and not OE that are no way the same original quality. Many of the parts are now made in China so do you think the Chinese steel quality is the same as say German and Swedish used to be and they use the same quality standards? Possible but unlikely. Sure they can make good stuff but.....

Neil.
